Emilie Simon
« on: March 19, 2011, 10:42:57 PM »
I haven't seen much love for her on this forum, so I figured I should try to spread it.

I'm a new fan, but I love her work. She combines pop, electronica, ethereal stuff, and soundscapes. In some ways she's reminiscent of Bjork, but her voice is a little more accessible. All of her sings are creative and experimental, and she's not afraid to try out multiple styles on a single album. She sings some songs in French, and some in English. I highly recommend her to anyone who enjoys the aforementioned genres, or anyone who is just searching for some good music.

This is her, by the way:

I really like her, she's one of my favorite artists. Can't pick a favorite album, probably the first one.

Listening now, it's really good stuff. She's quite popular on last.fm as well, surprisingly enough. Maybe she's bigger in France?

Probably. I know she's done a lot of interviews in France, and she released a live DVD that was filmed there as well.

Also, her best album is probably Vegetal. It's her perfect balance of experimentation and accessibility. Her debut is good, too. The Big Machine is very different. TBM has more "American" influences, I guess, and most of it is sung in English. It's based off the time she spent in New York. It has more of a poppy feel, and there is a good deal of horn sections on it. It's pretty awesome.

She also composed the original soundtrack to March of the Penguins, titled La Marche de l'Empereur. Awesome stuff, especially All is White and Ice Girl. Check out her live album/DVD, too.

Just today she released a new remix of Rainbow, which is the first track of The Big Machine. I loves it! I think I like this more electronic-sounding version than the original, to be honest.

Listen to Vegetal first. It's her best, and probably one of my favorite albums of all time.

Here's a new cover she made of Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy:

I've never heard of this artist or song, but it's lovely.

I meant to post this awhile ago. This is a great interview of her, plus stripped down versions of Rainbow and the Bronski Beat cover.

Great song. It feels like a more natural progression from Vegetal. I love The Big Machine, but it was a noticeably radical departure from her previous efforts.

Can't wait for the new album! It's coming out soon, apparently.

I would but i'm in a shitty mood and have too much shit to do that I wouldn't fully enjoy it at the moment but like...

when thanksgiving break comes next week, i'm just gonna lock myself if my room with a bottle of jack, some tissues, and emilie simon's discography

Oh and a fleshlight for when my arm gets tired
