The Voice (American Idol rival)
« on: March 16, 2011, 12:38:22 PM »
Last year, the show The Voice of Holland started here in the Netherlands. The show has an interesting twist, quite refreshing. Essentially, the audition is pure based on what the judge hears. A whole lot of the show is similar to Pop Idol and the like, except that the auditioners (accompanied by a live band), who sing for an audience (similar to X Factor), are hidden from view for the judges, who can only see them if they decide to coach them by pressing a button; those who don't press still won't see the auditioner(s).

Anyway, I knew that NBC bought the rights for the show, and that it would try hard to rival American Idol, but I'm still surprised at the artists they got signed for the show: Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Christina Aguilera.

Okay, I don't know the first two, but I'm impressed that they got Adam; I'm most impressed that they got Christina Aguilera for the show, though!

Interesting premise, I think it will add a lot more suspense into the auditions.  It will also allow the judges to more accurately judge based on vocal performance instead of looks or stage presence.

I do have to mention that there is a round before the judge round. This first round is similar to Pop Stars: a capella singing for one of the many rooms with each two or more unknown judges who can see you. This round won't be shown, though; also the round is very tough and a lot more serious. I can tell, as I've partaken the show, along with X Factor 'n' Pop Idol ('n' Popstars).
So, it's not a complete 'blind' audition. The real jury hears the preselected candidates for the first time, though.

Pop Idol: The prejury liked my singing, but wanted me to sing some other pop song, as Gethsemane (Jesus Christ Superstar), which I sang first, was too musical; I freaked out, as I didn't know what else to sing (although I prepared), and so bye, bye, Manuel.
X Factor: Prejury, Marco Borsato (Dutch singer), immediate exit.
X Factor: Prejury, Children of the Damned, immediate exit, although everyone thought I was in, as the good bits of the audition was used for the promotional commercial.
The Voice: Prejury, Children of the Damned, which went great, they were impressed, but my radiance/appearence was not good enough (yeah, the prejury can judge that), exit.
Popstars: Prejury, As (Stevie Wonder, yeah, something different, this time), through to the next round with the real jury . . . I received a pretty good advice, then. They liked my light lyric tenor voice quite a lot tonewise, and at first sight (before singing), my presence was promising; my delivery, though, was cold, mechanical, emotionless, closed. I agree, when I film myself playing guitar, it looks quite good, but when I film myself singing a song, it's so . . . robotic. A whole lot of a relaxed attitude with confidence is missing.

Fortunately, it's getting better and better. Mind, that I participated a lot, because 1: it's free (except for the travel costs); 2: save for the commercialism, the camera's, the entertainment around it, it's no different from an audition for a play or musical; 3: It's great fun to do, it's very exciting.

Okay, cool. I never watch any of these shows but let us know when you get to the finals of one of these shows and I'll be sure to watch :). My parents watch them once a while though and if I happen to be at my parents when it's on I usually catch a bit. I also don't get why there are so many of these shows. You would expect people to get bored after a couple of them but apparantly they are still succesful.

Well, the shows are still making money, but I remembered my first Idols audition, back in 2005, with a reserved Idols-bus, hundreds and hundreds of people, traffic jams, and attention from everybody (I SAW YOU ON IDOLS, EVERYBODY, I KNOW THIS GUY!). Every following audition was a lot less crowded, and a whole lot less hysterical (except for Popstars, for which the focus group is different, or so it seems).

Three contestants of this X Factor, forming the band Adlicious (two girls and a lucky guy), I know from the Conservatory. They are fantastic, and very kind people in real life, too. They were so crazy to go to London for the British X Factor, for which they got through quite some rounds, from what I've heard.

DVR'd but I haven't had a chance to watch it.  Will respond after seeing it.

Screw vocal performances, give me a show that has a talent pool of actual musicians.

I have a feeling, that for purposes of TV, they'll pass a ton of people through whose voices contrast greatly with their looks. We'll hear someone that sounds like Celine Dion, only to find out they look like Roseanne.

Unfortunately, looks are as important as voice to be a successful pop star: stage presence, posters, music videos, etc. There's a reason it's called an "image."

I'm not saying I agree with it; it's just the way it is. Maybe they'll try to alleviate that a bit.
Listen! Do you smell something?

I really enjoyed how all the judges opened the show by performing, kind of proving why they deserved to be judges you know?
