Eh, Orchid and Morningrise get too much hate on this forum. They're better albums than you all give them credit for.

Morningrise was my favorite Opeth album for a long time.

Yeah the hate for Orchid and Morningrise is absurd, they aren't bad.
The only difference as I see it is that the production sounds older (crappier to some), but at least it isn't shit like the sound on BWP.
And let's not forget that Orchid and Morningrise combined has a lot of fantastic songs, some of them would rank very high if I tried to make a topX-Opeth list.

I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

I LOVE Damnation, but Opeth has put out so much great material it still falls to 6th in my ranking.  Everything above it is just much more diverse.  I have to be in a certain mindset for Damnation, as amazing as it is.

I kinda feel the same.
Damnation is superb and enjoyable all the way through, but it lacks diversity compared to the other albums.
I also feel like Damnation has some songs, Closure being a great example - which sounds 20 times better live, in the case with Closure I feel like the climax is one of the best things, and on album it doesn't sound nearly as good.

The thing with Opeth is that none of their albums are at all bad, some are just less good than others.

Damnation is a fantastic album btw but I concur with a few others in saying that it's just not varied enough to rank above other Opeth records in my list.

Orchid is actually pretty good despite the bad production, but the other albums blow it away in quality except for Deliverance & Morningrise.  Morningrise has good songs like Advent (RAH version anyway), Night and the Silent Water, and To Bid You Farewell, but the others...nah.  Normally that would be okay, but those two songs are half the album!

Now Zantera, I asked this in the last thread (which I guess has been deleted), and I have to ask again: what the hell is the matter with BWP's sound?  There's nothing wrong with it!

This.  The acoustic guitar tone alone is the best I've ever heard!

it's fine (even understandable) to prefer the production of other records to BWP, but anyone who says BWP has shit production is just an idiot. i will pick BWP every time, though.

the worst (on the Opeth forum, actually) is when people say the production of MAYH is as bad/worse than Morningrise and Orchid, which is just the most ass-backward, deaf thing i've ever seen people say.

MAYH's sound is perfect.  Raw like Orchid/Morningrise, but not terribly so, the heavy parts are all accentuated better than any other Opeth album, and the soft bits are haunting and ghostlike.   :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart

I was about to be like "fuck that, I'm not ranking the albums AGAIN, we've done that like 20 times already", but then I remembered this is a new thread, so it's ok.

----------

2. Deliverance
3. Blackwater Park
4. Still Life
5. Morningrise
6. My Arms, Your Hearse
7. Damnation
8. Watershed

-----------

9. That other album they did with the flower on it

I have no idea since when Ghost Reveries got such love in this forum. Probably ever since Gadough. This is bad. Because Still Life is the only best Opeth album.

Ghost Reveries is the greatest thing ever made by humanity. It could whip sliced bread's ass. That's why it gets so much love.
