One of the reasons that Opeth are one of the few metal bands I still love is because they boldly tread the waters that many metal bands fear.

Lat raises an excellent point.

@Zantera: Have you ever listened to Nevermore? They're a good example of a band that plays really heavy music with (mostly) clean vocals. They make it work.
A good but terrible example.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I have to agree. Their guitar tone is excellent too.

Too true, Nevermore are probably the most boring metal band I've ever heard. They are just a microcosm of metal.

On the topic of Opeth, I'd be up for an Opeth top 20 if anyone is interested in my views? I'm still fairly new and mysterious...

It's a good thing I'm a nice guy. Because from this view I have of you through your bedroom window shows about 6 different vantage points I would have upon sneaking in. That way, I would have the upper hand in my attempt to strangle you vigorously as I whisper into your ear "Welcome to the end my friend, the sky has opened".

Naw it's cool, to each his own. Even if your opinions of Nevermore is entirely wrong.

Lol I knew this was coming as soon as I clicked post.

IDK, I just find them kind of bland - sort of generic (boring might of been a bit strong). I obviously haven't listened to them enough to fully appreciate their stuff. From what I've heard, its kind of shred -> chorus -> solo -> shred -> chorus. Maybe the formula works for some, just not me.

Nevermore is cool, I guess. But most heavy metal doesn't really demand my attention anymore.

Opeth is one of the exceptions, though.

Nevermore are great but they have a couple of pretty sucky albums. Listen to This Godless Endeavour. If you don't like it, get new ears.

I have heard the last Nevermore-album, but not really my type of music. :P
But I agree with pretty much what Lat said about the growls being a very big part of Opeth's music, and not having them would leave an album a bit empty.

So, assuming the Opeth fans can move on from my disdain for Nevermore...I'm gonna go ahead with a Opeth Top 20. I'm thinking I'll make it its own thread, but to kick things off I'll let you know my terms of reference and also the songs which don't make the "assessment cut" (ie, songs I know wouldn't make it into my top 20).

First and foremost, Opeth was my first "band" (in 2002), by which I mean I went out a bought all their CDs, listened to them constantly and thought sexy thoughts about them. They kind of led me to where I am now. I don't listen to much death metal any more (actively listen, I still hear it on radio, from my brother, friends etc); early Opeth are really the exception.

So, I'm going to look at Opeth album released tracks only. This means, no covers, no re-released demos, no one-offs etc. By my reckoning, that means there is 64 tracks over 9 albums. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

These are the tracks that didn't make the cut:
Advent
Black Rose Immortal
By the Pain I See in Others
Coil
For Absent Friends
Karma
Madrigal
Nectar
Requiem
Silhouette
The Twilight is my Robe

Most of those are bridging tracks I know, but hey, they count.

So, early comments? I'm looking to do, say, 2 write-ups a day over the course of two working weeks starting on Monday 4 April. I'm in the best country in the world, so my times won't match up to pretty much anyone on the board. Could be a good thing, but could also lead to alot of comments for me to answer at any given time if this thing is well subscribed (which I hope it will be ;D)

Let your journey into my Opeth-psyche begin!

Your heartwarming enthusiasm and overwhelming expectation for Riceball's Opeth Top 20 has really floored me DTF, I'm lost for words truly lost for words...

 :loser:

Regardless, I've narrowed down my list to 20 (it started at 69, got it down to 40 fairly quickly, 20 was a killer). I'm thinking I'll start posting write-ups next Monday. BUT, to build some anticipation, here are some songs that DIDN'T make the list:

April Ethereal
Atonement
Blackwater Park
Heir Apparent
Moonlapse Vertigo
Reverie/Harlequin Forest
The Grand Conjuration
The Night and the Silent Water

I'd appreciate some feigned interest ;)

Blackwater Park is their best song, and April Ethereal is top ten as well.  Harleaquin Forest is the best song on Ghost Reveries, and the Night and the Silent Water is the best song from Morningrise.  What the hell, Riceball?

From their FB page:

Keyboardist Per Wiberg has been relieved of his duties in Opeth as part of a mutual decision with the band. Keyboard duties on upcoming tours will be handled by a musician who is already rehearsing with the band. Said musician’s identity will be released at a later date.

Vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt released the following statement about the matter: “Well, it’s been somewhat of a revolving door of members during the last couple of years, and now, Per is no longer a member. Mendez, Axe and Fredrik and I came to the decision that we should find a replacement for Per right after the recordings of the new album, and this came as no surprise to Per. He had, in turn, been thinking about leaving, so you could say it was a mutual decision. There’s no bad blood, just a relationship that came to an end, and that’s that. We wish Per the best, and he did a splendid job recording keyboards for the last record, which stands as his final recording with Opeth.”

Opeth remain hard at work on their next album, which follows up 2008’s critically acclaimed Watershed.  The album is due out this Fall on Roadrunner Records.

Wow, so they recorded his parts, then was asked to leave by the band, which includes 2 members who've only been there for one album?  I hope it was more mutual than it really sounds.
