Watershed is solid, but it doesn't have a single song that I have a big urge to listen to.
It's like 7 good songs, but none that would make it to my top20-25 Opeth-songs.
Coil/Heir Apparent
The Lotus Eater
Burden
Hessian Peel

I have no idea what you are talking about. Those songs alone make for badass stand alone tracks, and Hessian Peel is easily a top 5 for me.

Porcelain Heart on the other hand, can go suck Asian wang.

And before someone dares me to do it, here are 25 songs (In no particular order) that would certainly be 'up there' for me:

In Mist She Was Standing
Under the Weeping Moon
The Night and the Silent Water
April Ethereal
When
The Amen Corner
Demon of the Fall
The Moor
Face of Melinda
Serenity Painted Death
Blackwater Park
The Drapery Falls
The Leper Affinity
Harvest
Deliverance
A Fair Judgement
Wreath
Masters Apprentices
Windowpane
Hope Leaves
Weakness
Ghost of Perdition
The Baying of the Hounds
Harlequin Forest
Isolation Years

Then there would probably be one or two Watershed-songs in the next 5, but still.
Making this list, I still had to leave out some really good songs, but I didn't really 'miss' anything from Watershed. :P

Indeed it is. It's the song that got me in to Opeth, and still remains my favorite. Seeing it live was one of the highlights of my life.

Ghost Reveries is not only Opeth's best album, but it sits comfortably in my top 5 of all time.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Has there ever been an Opeth "Top X" in a similar vein to the one in the DT sub-forum?

If not, why the hell not they seem to be one of the most heavily debated bands here. Itd be really interesting to set up, say, a top 20 Opeth with write-ups, favourite moments etc.

Or am I talking out of my arse?
I punch those numbers into my calculator and they make a happy face.

How would we all feel if Opeth released a growl-free album?

Not Damnation-esque, still heavy...just no growls

If one growl-free album means a higher probability of no more growl-free albums from now onward, I would be a little sad.

But I would not mind at all. They have made at least four truly amazing albums in their career, a feat unmatched by most.

I have no preference towards or against growls, so I wouldn't really care. It would depend entirely on the quality of the music.

Then it would just be like every other metal-album?
I can't say that growls are the best thing that music offers, and I can't say that I dislike it either.
Done well - fantastic, Done poorly - then I don't really care for it.
Overall though, growls are a very huge part of the Opeth-sound, and them making a non-growl album is pretty much as exciting as Dream Theater making a non progressive album. (to give an example)

The way I see it is this: I love lots of non-prog albums. I love lots of albums that have no growls. So if DT or Opeth were to release albums like that, then I can't see why I'd care in the slightest.

Long as the music's good.  I'm sure they could do a heavyish album with no growls.  Demon of the Fall, When, Lotus Eater, and Bleak have heavy bits with clean vocals and they work brilliantly.

I don't particularly want them to, but if they did, I think I would enjoy it. At the very least, I'd give it a chance. I think they could pull it off.

Having no growls would be completely contradictory to what Opeth's signature sound is. I know, you can make the argument that there is no specific sound for prog since it's all about change, progressing and moving forward with new ideas. But with Opeth, the growls represent something much more than sheer brutality and anger much like most death metal bands are going for. The growls in Opeth (at least to me) are a representation of the ugly, dark and evil tones of their music while the clean vocals act as the beautiful, sad and often melancholic side of their music. To me, an Opeth album without any growls would be missing a large portion of their dimension and substance.

This is why Opeth remains my favourite band to play both progressive and death metal music. They aren't just using growls because "lol we play hevy mehtul".

Well true.
I'm all for artists trying new stuff, but after hearing bands like BTBAM and Opeth, heavy music (and now I mean real heavy) with normal vocals just comes off as very cheesy to me, and even though Åkerfeldt has a great voice, it would sound pretty.. lame.
The growls + the heavy music results in the heavy side of Opeth, if you take away the growls and add normal singing, it would sound like a band "trying to sound heavy, but melodic at the same time", something I personally don't like that much. :P

Lat raises an excellent point.

@Zantera: Have you ever listened to Nevermore? They're a good example of a band that plays really heavy music with (mostly) clean vocals. They make it work.
