Let's just leaving it with "Morningrise and Orchid sucks, anyone who says otherwise should die painfully" :P

I don't think anyone is saying that.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?

No one's saying you should die painfully, we just happen to disagree because we're wanky prog nerds who dislike Opeth's two most "prog" albums.

Morningrise has great songs. But it suffers from WDADU production. Nectar has some amazing bass, and is really underrated. If any album needed a remaster it'd be Morningrise.

That statement doesn't really make much sense. :P
Opeth has probably become more and more progressive, what I meant was that it's not really surprising that people coming from a prog-background tend to prefer the latter albums.
When I got into Opeth, I didn't listen to prog at all, so I kinda fell in love with all of it, and it's probably thanks to Opeth that I got into this type of music.

Considering how long the songs are and how often everything changes, the first two albums are pretty "prog" as well.  Opeth has become more "progressive" in evolving their sound, but those first two stereotypical prog aspects are what I was referring to with regard to Morningrise/Orchid.  So saying progheads tend to prefer later albums doesn't really make much sense when you've got two albums like Orchid/Morningrise, unless you have to like organs to be a real proghead.  :P

Well what I mean is that.. I feel like they have evolved the transitions a lot from album to album.
Even though I love Orchid and Morningrise (so no bashing here), they do feel a bit more 'sudden' in the changes from heavy parts to soft sometimes, meanwhile I think on albums like Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries, they build-up to the changes in another way.

If that makes any sense. :P

^this makes sense.

The transitions in some prog music are so subtle you forget that the song started out like a metal song, and then, wait...waht? JAZZ? It's that subtlety that I love in prog music.

Zantera, some people just don't like those albums, it has nothing to do with a prog background. As Matt has explained, that doesn't even make sense. :lol

Orchid and Morningrise are probably a bit more Black Metal-leaning that the later stuff.

Hopefully this is considered a fair judgement of the earlier material. It also gives credence to the notion that they have always been a prog band; evolving their style. The thread is likely to turn a bit bleak if the debate continues to follow similar patterns in the older threads. In my time of need, I know that I can turn to open to rid the disease of boredom, while simultaneously delivering atonement for listening to generic music in the car on the way home.

So I'm bored, don't judge me :)

Yeah that is cool, but I still feel like there's a pretty huge change in the way they handle transitions now and how they did it on Orchid/Morningrise. :P

Orchid and Morningrise are more random in their transitions, but I still love them. I wouldn't rank any Opeth album below an 8/10.

Don't be silly, those have been in a landfill for more than ten years.

EDIT: PoO: Wait, did you just admit that the little scheduling snafu with MAYH isn't a reason to dislike the album, and then make a joke not-so-subtly hinting that you're still displeased with it?

EDIT2: Lol, your acronym is "poo"

yes, i not-so-subtly hinted. *runs and jumps in a tub of boiling lava lamp liquid*.

and yes, i unfortunately share the same acronym as Power of Omens (i believe their guitarist used to post on the old dreamtheater.net forums, and i pointed out his unfortunate acronym...but then i decide to adopt in on the new boards, so...)

If any album needed a remaster it'd be Morningrise.

remastering wouldn't do much of anything (besides implore ignorant fans into rebuying records they already own). Orchid and Morningrise need full on re-mixing, if not re-recording; starting with crap usually always ends up in crap, but if they had the presence of mind to record the guitar direct in addition to their amped signals, they could easily reamp the guitars and bass and get much better tone out of them. other things would need serious studio work or re-recording (acoustic guitars, drums), but it could all be salvaged if the guitar tone can be saved. otherwise, re-recording would be the only way to make the album production style match what they've done from MAYH onward.

thing is, i dunno if they need it. though i'd love to hear "To Bid You Farewell" without acidic guitars ripping at my ears, there is some bizarre magic to the mood of these records, and the production is a gigantic informer of mood.

Not to divert from the Orchid/Morningrise discussion, but I'm listening to Dammnation atm and I gotta say the mixing and mastering are ridiculously good. The whole thing is crystal clear and the layering really helps build the atmosphere. Even the louder parts sound subtle and really divine (I've never used that word in my life!)

Steve Wilson.

So, Mr Wilson was involved with BWP, Deliverance and Dammnation; nothing before, nothing after.

Whats up with that? Was Mikael looking for a mentor or something like that? It just seems a bit wierd, cos Steve does a fair bit of mixing & mastering doesn't he?

EDIT: Just realised he's slated to be involved with the new album...again, whats up with that?

contrary to popular belief, steven wilson is not god, and therefore has limited time to work on his many projects and tours. so i'm guessing scheduling is what's up.

I didnt meant whats up with that as an attack on him, I was merely asking whether anyone could shed any light on his interaction with the band. No need to be so harsh :chill

I think Akerfeldt just asked him to produce an album since they were friends and he was a huge fan of Wilson's work. They liked it so much he came back for the next two albums. I'm not sure why they stopped though.

Just got home with the Watershed vinyl, I'm a happy man (well I was uncomfortable for the last couple of hours because I smileed a bit in my pants when I found it, but it's ok now that I have changed).

I'm on Burden now, having a great time with this listen. Coil was especially awesome, the guitars sound very crispy and kind of metallic on it and Heir Apparent was just brutal.

I got my Watershed vinyl signed by the whole band, awesome stuff to have. Not very interested in getting autographs, but having Opeth's feels pretty awesome to me. I also have PT's autographs on the The Incident album. Those are all I need, really. Love those bands.

Watershed is solid, but it doesn't have a single song that I have a big urge to listen to.
It's like 7 good songs, but none that would make it to my top20-25 Opeth-songs.
