I don’t have last.fm so my best idea for how to give you an idea of my favourite bands is this. In my Top 20 Prog bands list, the list was as follows:

20. Cardiacs
19. Tool
18. Jethro Tull
17. Anglagard
16. The Mars Volta
15. Harmonium
14. Peter Gabriel
13. Psychotic Waltz
12. King Crimson
11. Kayo Dot
10. Gong
9. Gentle Giant
8. Yes
7. Can
6. Porcupine Tree
5. Pink Floyd
4. Genesis
3. Dream Theater
2. Magma
1. Van der Graaf Generator

Here were my honourable mentions (plus a few I missed at the time):
Amon Duul II
Marillion
Pain Of Salvation
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Weidorje
Koenjihyakkei
Henry Cow
Neu!
Caravan
Bondage Fruit
Soft Machine
IEM
Eloy
Sieges Even
Hawkwind
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Ash Ra Tempel
Minds Eye
Popol Vuh
Vanden Plas
Agalloch
Ruins
maudlin of the Well
The Flower Kings
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Hatfield and the North
National Health
Sigur Ros

Bands that would’ve been there should I have made the list earlier are:
Birds and Buildings
Jean Louis
Big Big Train
Oceansize
Opeth
Unexpect

Other prog bands I like:
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Transatlantic
I.Q.
Pendragon
Ozric Tentacles
Atomic Rooster

There may be more, but I don’t feel like remembering them. It'd be pretty hard. :P

Of non-prog and jazz, my favourite bands are:
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Herbie Hancock
Miles Davis
Return to Forever
Radiohead
System of a Down
Pantera
Slayer
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Buckethead (I actually think he's prog, but so many disagree so I'll stick him here)
Paul Gilbert
Down
At the Drive-In
The Bouncing Souls

What I like:
Well you all know how proggy I am. My other favourite genres are post-rock, math-rock, avant-garde, RIO, krautrock, psychedelia, and jazz. I’ll even enjoy pop if there’s something different and original about it.

I'm also a metalhead. :metal I can be kinda picky with growling/barking vocals, so be careful with usage of those. I also loves me some good riffs!

Weirdness is a HUGE plus for me. Nothing is too weird for me, so taking advantage of that might be good. :) Just as long as it's weird but still good.

Instrumental virtuosity always helps too.

I'm not very picky with vocals (besides growls/barks/screams), so if you think a song may have unappealing vocals don't worry about it, I can probably look past it.

What I hate:
I cannot stand unoriginality. :P I'm usually not a fan of screams, unless used in an appropriate climactic fashion. I'm also not much of a fan of these genres:
Rap
Hip-hop
Country
Reggae

I would say punk, but I have my exceptions.

Time limit: Songs may be up to 15 minutes in length.

Round 1: I figured I'd start things off with a round dedicated to long intros. A long intro can be any song that takes a long time until the vocals show up, or just a long time until the song really gets going. Examples are Octavarium and Shine On You Crazy Diamond (although they don't have to be THAT long. ;) ). You have 2 days.

P.S. If my introduction sucks too much, I'll be happy to answer questions. As long as they aren't too specific. I don't wanna be too specific about my tastes to make sure there is more risk/excitement to things. ;)

Cool.  Is the "non-prog" theme still on?  My submissions will probably be along those lines regardless, but I was just wondering...

Nope. Prog is allowed, I'm just warning you all that I know quite a bit of prog, so aiming for the obscure is recommended.

I would assume so.

As for alphabetising, just do a Ctrl+F search.

Not sure what the top rated are, but I've gotten nothing 2011 yet. From 2010 I've heard:
X - Spock's Beard
Aquarius - Haken
s/t - Il Tempio delle Clessidre
Creation de l'universe - Xing Sa
Clivages - Univers Zero
A Child in the Mirror - Ciccada
In the Wake of Evolution - Kaipa

Alright. This was incredibly hard for me as all these songs were pretty damned good. If you got a low rank, please do not be discouraged. It was quite painful to rank some songs as low as they were.

Best song (5 points):

zxlkho: Flying Whales - Gojira

Oh my god this song was amazing. Gojira has been on my "bands to check out" list for quite a long time, and I could not have asked for a better introduction. The intro was killer and really set the mood well for this track. The growls didn't turn me off of the song at all and I love those djenty riffs. :metal Amazing song, and I'll definitely be checking out Gojira further soon enough.

High tier (4 points):

ariich: Supercrush! - Devin Townsend

The intro wasn't very long, but neither was the song, so it works. Anyways, my only previous experience with Devy is Ziltoid the Omniscient, a killer album. The intro of this song left me thinking The Mirror was starting up. :lol The melodies in this song really stuck with me I gotta say, and the female vocals were really good. Devy is an awesome vocalist as always, and this song really was just awesome.

jsem: Kings and Queens - Renaissance

I am quite familiar with Renaissance, but I actually haven't listened to them in about a year. I do not own the album this song is on, but damn this is a great song. The folkiness is really a great touch and I love the vocals. The instrumental section was pretty killer too. Anyways, all-around great selection, and really there are no dull moments in this one.

Middle tier (3 points):

dtismajesty: 30:55 - Olafur Arnalds

My favourite part about this song is just the way it progresses. From the soft notes on the piano all the way into string sections at whatnot, it's a really tasty composition, and is really elegant in it's simplicity. I really like this mixture of classical and post-rock. Overall great song.

DTVT: Secrets of Centuries - Clockwork

Pretty strong shades of Fates Warning here. This song was pretty epic right from the getgo. Some nice riffs, and some really good guitarwork all around are present here. The singer is pretty good too. Really nice prog metal song.

Medium low tier (2 points):

The King In Crimson: Lazy - Deep Purple

I'll admit I'm not a Deep Purple fan at all, but this song impressed me. The intro was really nice and fun to listen to. After the vocals came in, it wasn't as impressive unfortunately. But that intro was really nice.

TheVoxyn: Dance Dance Dance - 65daysofstatic

I'm an electronic newb, really. This song wasn't bad though. The last minute was pretty killer I think, and it was pretty fun to listen to. A simple song really, not much to say.

Bottom (1 point):

Gorille85: Different Worlds - The Pineapple Thief

Alright, I do not dislike this song at all. In fact, it's pretty good and I liked the intro quite a bit. But the one problem I had is that I couldn't help but feel it should've been shorter. That's really the only problem though, as overall it was a good song, and I really like this bands sound. Don't let this discourage you though, as knowing your amazing taste, you will most definitely do better later on. :) But for now, sorry man. :(

Stats:
zxlkho: 5
ariich/YtseBitsySpider: 4
jsem: 4
dtismajesty: 3
DTVT: 3
The King In Crimson: 2
TheVoxyn: 2
Gorille85: 1

Round 2: I'm in a really saxy mood today, so this round will be somewhat based on that. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find me a song that makes usage of any wind/brass instrument. Flutes, saxophones, tubas, clarinets, kazoos, vuvuzelas, whatever. Just gimme something with an instrument you blow into. :D It doesn't necessarily have to play a leading role, but it should at least be noticably involved.

Oh yeah, I must have missed the word "long" for that round, because I was just thinking good intros generally. :lol Oh well, glad you dug it so much, it's a friggin' amazing song! :D

For this round, presumably you're thinking rock/metal that utilises a wind instrument, rather than anything (jazz would be easy, but probably cheating. :P) ??

Anything goes really.

Jazz would be easy to find yes, but I tend to be kinda picky towards jazz. ;)
