The Frost* thread
« on: March 01, 2011, 10:08:59 AM »
Jem today on his forum:

Quote
Hello all,

There’s not really an easy way to say this, so I’ll just say it. I’ve decided to suspend the Frost project with immediate effect. If this were somebody else’s band, I’d just say I was leaving, it would be so much easier, but it’s not so easy when you’ve created the band in the first place…

The reasons are many - I don’t feel comfortable any longer in the role of singer/front man/keyboard player/principle songwriter/principle cheque writer. Truth be told, I never have. It’s all got a bit out of hand from the gently self-mocking studio project I started for fun in a shed in East Sussex in May 2004 when I was young and happy and it was always sunny.

More than that though, trying to juggle two full time careers as I have over the last 7 years has been a tough ask and has ultimately become a price to high to pay in certain areas of my life. One of which is my health. I’ve been to a very dark place over the last 8 days and ended up in a pretty bad way. Although I’m now emerging out the other side (a stone lighter into the bargain), I have realised that I have some serious issues I must address. I’m no longer young, I’m no longer happy and the sun is no longer shining.

These issues have made me realise that life is sometimes about doing what you must do when the time comes regardless of what other people might want or expect of you. Some things are bigger than music or bands, expectation or disappointment. Figuratively speaking, I’ve now been given a yellow card and my priority now is to get myself back together before I get sent off for good.

So what now?

Nothing. I’m going to go to ground for a bit. Be private. Grow some veg. Get well.

And reflect. It’s been an amazing journey full of brilliant moments. Too many to list, I’m sorry it’s stopped like this, so abruptly, but I’ve been at my wits end lately and I’m no use to anybody in an urn.

I hope you’ll understand. Thank you for being brilliant.

Jem.

Well that kinda sucks.  Both albums are kinda proof that you can write purely modern prog music and make it sound fresh and exciting rather than something we've heard before.  Hope he gets well soon.

Dark month (or so) for modern progressive rock. Hope the man's okay. The poor fella sounds like he's having the week from hell. Whatever it is, couldn't happen to a nicer chap. Best wishes to the Jemminator.

Bad news for us, too... I adore Frost. They're my favourite modern band. Fingers crossed that when he sorts all these troubles out, business may resume. A similar thing happened after Milliontown. But there's no hurry. Jem comes first. And if it never happens, I'm just glad that Frost released two amazing albums, and went out on a high with the best live album I've got in my catalogue, plus the absolutely sublime Dividing Line. He's spoilt us already. Deserves to spoil himself, now, for sure.

Good luck, dude!

That's bad news indeed. I would have loved to see them live. Sad to see that this won't happen.

I feared as much would happen... a real shame, too, considering how much hype was built around Frost*'s third album!

Maybe in a couple years once Jem has had some time to make his peace with life and feel like he can do Frost* music again. I hope all the best for him.

I wonder if this means John Mitchell is free, and if so, would he be willing to do a new Kino album with Pete Trewavas and John Beck (and hopefully Chris Maitland)? I can only hope that doing the Defence Of The Realm gigs might interest John to work with Pete again!

Either way, all the best for Jem, and I hope this year will be quite a good one for him. Now I wonder if we'll ever see/hear anything from the December shows he did with Frost* last year? Hmmm...

Very sad, but I think Jem's a pretty cool guy, so I find it hard to hate him for DESTROYING THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC I SO DEARLY LOVE.

Just kidding.  Sad news, but I wish him the best.

Listen.  I love both CD's but didn't Jem do this after the first CD and then came back to do another?  I'm hoping the same happens.

Yeah absolutely. He did say "suspend" rather than "terminate". Hopefully a break will do him some good and we'll get some more music further down the line!

Totally. It's very possible that it's not the end, but I'm too fond of Jem to want to be presumptuous about it. "Ahhh, he'll get it back together again - nothing to worry about." Fingers crossed that Frost* will return, though.

I didn't like the second album nearly as much as the first (except for the awesome "Dear Dead Days" and a couple of other pretty good songs), and I didn't think the first was as jaw-droppingly awesome as a lot of people did (although I do like it a lot), so I am fairly ambivalent about this.  If they eventually return and make new music, I'll check it out, but if not, there are enough bands making good music these days to keep this music fan fat and sassy.

Sad, sad. But I'm also not terribly surprised given the previous post he made.

Man am I happy to have seen them live. And I can honestly say that it was one of the greatest concerts I have attended.

Was that the Philly show that they recorded for the live album?

Yeah, in Philly. Small venue full of geriatric prog fans (it was rather sad really), but the show continuously sent shiver down my spine, and I can't think of the last show that did that.

That's great, the live discs are excellent, the band seemed to be sounding on top form that night! I've seen them twice, but one was a support slot and the other was their Christmas gig where they'd all clearly had a couple of drinks. :lol Both were still very good performances but had their weaknesses.
