Well, I will take my tiny netbook with me (for uploading pics etc.), I expect there will be the regular travel boredom setting in combined with Wifi access :D

And no South America! DUDE!

It was initially actually. But, I wanted to limit the total amount of time to 6 months, and there was no way I could do SA in that time frame. So, I figured that SA is "close" enough for me to go on separate trips afterward.
But trust me, it was not an easy decision :p
Notice that Africa is also missing (except Egypt).

No England?

Haha. I've already lived there for several months, no need to include that in a world trip. Europe is really only in there because a) my dad's turning 70 in August and I want to be there for the celebration and b) it's on the way to the other stuff.

Incredible. When you say ticket, do you mean about 20 tickets?

The way it works is that yes, it's 16 separate tickets, but all bought together as a single package. It's a special round-the-world ticket from the OneWorld Alliance.
It's also special in the sense that you need to commit to the stops, but not to the dates (except the first flight). So, I can decide on the fly whether I want to stay longer at a certain spot or not.

That's really cool. The problem that I'd have is not wanting to leave a place and then having to speed to the other places quickly just to get my money's worth.

That's fucking fantastic. Also mentioning that being single with no kids allows you to do stuff like this, I think 10k is definitely worth the buy! You may never have such an opportunity in your life, indeed.

Like said 10's of times already, jealous.

Don't know exactly yet, but I would think at least a week.

Don't die in Egypt.

Well, luckily Egypt is rather optional since I'm flying into Jordan. I would hope though that things have settled to normalcy by July.

Holy shit, I'm so jealous.

If you don't mind my asking, how is it that you're managing all of this?  I understand that you're not supporting other people (ie kids) and that you rent cheaply, so most of your money goes to that...but what sort of work do you do that you can just up and leave for months at a time?

I'd kill myself for you.

I work in a very fortunate job I think that is incredibly lenient. It models itself a lot after academia (to attract people from there), and so we always have a large flux of people who are there temporarily. We also don't necessarily have very fixed job descriptions; everybody is expected to be able to perform a wide range of jobs. Because of that, a missing coworker is more of a lack of overall resource than a missing key element in some supply chain or something. So, as long as I make sure that a good number of people can do my job when I'm gone, there shouldn't be much of a problem.

That holiday sounds unbelievable! Do you know where you're staying in Australia and for how long?

Your trip sounds awesome.....and you have such a great boss.

When in Egypt of course see the Pyramids....try to get there early if you want to go inside the big one....they only let about 150 a day inside...the middle one takes more each day....also don't skip Abu Simbel.

When in Australia make sure you include Melbourne.

The cost sounds great, I blew heaps on my US trip and I was only gone six weeks

I remember having a bit of anxiety before asking my boss at my last job to take just a month off.  I had already booked a 3+ week trip through Europe, and was fully prepared to quit if they wouldn't let me go.  Fortunately they didn't have too much trouble with it, although my boss did make me feel a bit guilty about it.  Then, last spring when i decided to leave there for good, they said they would hold a position for me if I decided to return in the next 6-12 months.  My current company does offer unpaid leaves of absence, so I will be keeping that in mind in the near future.  Anyway, sounds like a wonderful opportunity and I hope you squeeze everything you can out of it.

Booya, things are getting into the final phase now. My passport is somewhere inside the Indian embassy, and next week (hopefully) I will get it back and make a trip to New York to drop it off at the Chinese embassy.
Subtenant has signed, and I got my Eurail ticket to travel across Europe.

Excited!!

The European part is already shaping up to be awesome. If it works out, I will meet a friend in Greece who I have not seen in almost 12 years (met her in Israel in '98), and will meet another friend in Istanbul who is from Berlin but who I met in Alaska.

Traveling is the way to be.
