Do you have any specific points of interest you know you definitely want to check out in any of those places already or just wandering?
For some countries I have specific points (e.g. pyramids in Egypt, not much more than that), for others currently just broad regions (e.g. Rajhastan in India).
Also, what did your boss say? I imagine most bosses would be a little put off by someone saying "I'm going on a six month world tour."
I debated for about 2 months in my mind on how to start the conversation with my boss. In the end I accidentally did it the right way. I told my boss kinda in the hallway,
Me: "Hey, I need to talk to you when you have time."
Him: "Err.... should I be worried?"
Me: "Hmm, I don't think so, but it's kinda up to you."
I think that freaked him out sufficiently and made him worry that I'm leaving the company. So, when he actually came around to my office, I started out telling him that I'm fulfilling a dream of mine, to go on a world trip for 6 months. I think he was so relieved that I wasn't quitting that all he asked was "So, do you intend to come back?", to which my answer was "Yeah, if you let me". After that he was happy.
Another thing is that I've been the lead engineer for the last 3 years on a semi-high profile project of ours, so I also had a bit of leverage there.
And he knows my character enough in that I don't succumb to "from above" pressure. He knew that trying to force me to stay probably would have meant me quitting the job then.
