So, I talked to my boss the other day...
« on: January 28, 2011, 09:46:20 AM »
and told him that I will go on a leave of absence from July on, for about 6 months, to travel around the world.

Yeah, bitches.

The ticket is bought, the stops are:

- Southern Europe (Spain, Italy)
- Germany (well, my parents' place)
- Greece, Turkey
- Jordan, Egypt (they better have gotten their shit together by the time I come around)
- India
- China
- Japan
- Thailand (me maky love long time!)
- Vietnam (potentially)
- Singapore
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Hawaii

Lots of stops, and the 6 months are sort of a guideline really, it's pretty flexible. Might take longer, might not.

I'll try to post here and there during the trip, to keep you guys updated :D
Let's hope nothing gets in the way until then.

You're going to Jordan and Egypt but not Israel?

You should go there, it's really quite a lovely place.

I've already been to Israel, for 9 weeks actually, as an exchange student in '98. Aaaaawesome country, but I think I've really seen as much as there can be seen :lol

Do you have any specific points of interest you know you definitely want to check out in any of those places already or just wandering?

Also, what did your boss say?  I imagine most bosses would be a little put off by someone saying "I'm going on a six month world tour."

For some countries I have specific points (e.g. pyramids in Egypt, not much more than that), for others currently just broad regions (e.g. Rajhastan in India).

Also, what did your boss say?  I imagine most bosses would be a little put off by someone saying "I'm going on a six month world tour."

I debated for about 2 months in my mind on how to start the conversation with my boss. In the end I accidentally did it the right way. I told my boss kinda in the hallway,

Me: "Hey, I need to talk to you when you have time."
Him: "Err.... should I be worried?"
Me: "Hmm, I don't think so, but it's kinda up to you."

I think that freaked him out sufficiently and made him worry that I'm leaving the company. So, when he actually came around to my office, I started out telling him that I'm fulfilling a dream of mine, to go on a world trip for 6 months. I think he was so relieved that I wasn't quitting that all he asked was "So, do you intend to come back?", to which my answer was "Yeah, if you let me". After that he was happy.
Another thing is that I've been the lead engineer for the last 3 years on a semi-high profile project of ours, so I also had a bit of leverage there. :lol And he knows my character enough in that I don't succumb to "from above" pressure. He knew that trying to force me to stay probably would have meant me quitting the job then.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Awesome! But no Scandinavia?

I did a Scandinavian trip last year (Denmark, Sweden, Norway), and I stayed in Iceland last Christmas for 5 days.

Awesome opportunity you have rumborak.

Except don't you seem to have the worst luck traveling? Can we expect several threads with you posting from the tarmac, or stranded in an airport somewhere??

Well, with this trip, I actually expect that to happen :lol
I'm probably gonna be sleeping in airports waiting for the next plane and stuff.

Good thing is, I have enough money saved up that I can take a hotel if I want to.

The ticket was about $5,500. The rest (lodging etc.) I expect to amount about the same.

Eh, I don't have a car, and I rent quite cheaply. So, that money I instead save up and use for these kinds of activities.

Oh, it is, no doubt. But I'm in a unique situation (single with no kids and healthy) that very likely will never present itself in that way again. Dropping $10k on that opportunity is well worth it I think. Carpe Diem, as they say.
