Family Man is a great track. I still need to listen to Blackfield 4.

Went and purchased my copy of Blackfield V, released today. I haven't listened to all of it yet, but I love what I've heard so far. Some instant grabbers (Family Man, How Was Your Ride?,  Lately) and others with plenty of room to grow on me. It's great to have Blackfield back as a proper duo. That's how they work best.

Bought it from iTunes last night, but didn't have a chance all day to get to it till now.  Hoping it's a return to the wonderfulness of the first two albums...

October might just be my favourite Aviv-led Blackfield song. It's gorgeous and heartfelt.

October Aviv-led?
not sure, but Steven seems to have had quite a lot to do with that track (the standout on the record to me)

As far as I know the song was written by Aviv and is a personal song about his life (so a bit weird that SW sung it) similar to how From 44 to 48 was a personal song written by SW about his life.

So far, this sounds quite nice.  A definite upgrade over the last two albums (the 3rd was good, the 4th was mostly trash).

I personally really liked Welcome to My DNA a lot. II is still the best, I think. I've given V a listen and it seems to be definitely better than IV. IV had some great stuff but a lot of meh stuff.

I do wonder though, why is it,

Blackfield I
Blackfield II
Welcome to My DNA
Blackfield IV
Blackfield V

the lack of consistency :(

I haven't listened to IV and V but Welcome to my DNA had my favorite blackfiled song, "Waving"

Each of the first three albums had some tremendous tracks on there with the rest being meh.

DNA has three letters... Blackfield III... Steven Wilson helped create a song called Half Light..

Half Life III confirmed.

Could be an interesting idea...like people have done with self-titled albums in the past, give each Blackfield album a nickname based on something on the cover, like The Beatles' White Album, Peter Gabriel's first four self-titled albums, Metallica's "Black Album" and so forth. Go!

hey, I have to retract my last post slightly, as it seems you were spot-on about October per it was originally a song Aviv recorded.

Yes, it's surprisingly good..especially coming off those last two albums were they just felt very uninspiring to say the least (at least on the listening side).

But it's definitely SW singing it on Blackfield V though, and I did think on the first listen or two (prior to actually looking in the booklet) that it was Aviv singing. Basically I need to think before speaking.

Not sure who the female singer is on that one, but that is one of the two songs I think are somewhat average, The Jackal being the other.  Early favorites are Lately (that chorus!), October and Salt Water.

Also, as is normal when I get a new album from a band I'm a big fan of, I have revisisted all of their other stuff this week, and the third album is a lot better than I remember. Not quite as great as the first two, but still damn good (minus Go to Hell, which is the dumbest song ever).  The fourth album is still mostly forgettable.

Really not sure why IV gets so much hate. I and II are the clear best, but III and IV are about the same for me. And V is right up there with those two. Not great, but pleasant, probably a nice album to throw on Sunday morning when you're just piddling about not really doing much.

Not sure who the female singer is on that one

According to the credits, an Israeli singer by the name of Alex Moshe. I kind of assumed it was Ninet Tayeb at first as she'd been working with SW recently.

Lonely Soul isn't really my favourite. A nice tune, but aside from the chorus, it's just repeats of "I'm a lonely soul". I was expecting a bit more from it.

Early favorites are Lately (that chorus!), October and Salt Water.

Totally agree with Lately (my favourite). October is beautiful. Salt Water is lovely too, though I feel like I've heard that guitar melody sung before. It sounds like it could be a Porcupine Tree vocal melody or something.

Agreed, regarding Lonely Soul.  I like that recurring main line, but like you said, the song never really goes anywhere.

Undercover Heart has snuck up on me as well as one of the better tunes.

V is a decent return to form, nice album.

I just saw that Aviv Geffen was doing a tour through Europe playing Blackfield's material. Has anyone ever seen him live without Steven Wilson? Is it a good show?

I guess every third album won't be numbered?  :lol

Edit - So I listened to/watched the single on YouTube a couple of times. It's not bad, seems very in-line with how the band has progressed over the last couple of albums. As far as SW's involvement goes this time, I read on Burning Shed that he provides guitars, as well as lead vocals on 3 of the songs, but I'm not sure how much (co-)writing he handled on this one (as I am sure he was busy putting together TFB).

I'll pre-order it eventually, if not today then sometime soon. There doesn't seem to be any particular initial-run exclusives anywhere like the last couple of albums (IV and V had mediabooks, and the V mediabook was extra-large and VERY nicely put together and designed). Seems like the only variations outside of the CD digipak are the various colored vinyls, and since I don't collect vinyl, I guess I'll be sticking with the digipak!

I haven't followed Blackfield in a while since their 2nd album, I may have heard a few songs of DNA, haven't heard anything since. Might revist them soon.

Nope. I enjoy Aviv but he's very hit or miss for me. SW's stuff is usually my favorite.

Depends on the song. For me Aviv has always been the highlight of Blackfield and usually some of his songs are the best but SW has a few good ones too.

Regarding SW vs AG, I like both, but I think at this point, it comes down to the music, and not who is just singing it. By this point in the band's lifetime, I will expect the amount of Aviv vocal moments to measure 4-to-1 with Steven's vocal moments on any given album, especially given how back-and-forth Steven's involvement has been since the 3rd album.

At any rate, I did pre-order the album from Burning Shed, so I am pretty anxious to hear how the rest of the album sounds. Given their history, I don't expect every song to sound like the new single, and would be pretty disappointed if it became a bunch of Coldplay-knock-offs. One or two is fine, but I hope there a lot of that trademark Blackfield variety across the whole album.
