The Death thread V. I couldn't find one
« on: December 30, 2010, 09:23:11 PM »
Death is on iTunes and I got "Human."  Was the first I have heard this album.  Very good.  I have Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, and Spiritual Healing on cassette.  I looked on Amazon and I guess their discs have been discontinued.  Very expensive.

Discuss this band now.  What are the landmark albums?  I would say they were pretty influential since the term "death metal" seems to be coined after them...

The Sound of Perseverance is an incredible album. The only other one I have is Leprosy which is pretty good as well.

I love Death; one of my favorite bands.

Scream Bloody Gore = Death Metal's blueprint prototype. Good for what it is, and was a milestone, but is far from their best.
Leprosy = Basically more of the same, but improved slightly.
Spiritual Healing = I actually have never heard this album except for the first song. I was under the impression this was the only Death album that was out of print...
Human = Where they began to get "progressive." Song lyrics shifted dramatically, being more about philosophy and social issues than gore. Some would say this is their best. As much as I love it, I disagree.
Individual Thought Patterns = Another excellent album, following in Human's footsteps. Features Gene Hoglan on drums and Andy La-something from King Diamond on guitar. In my opinion, the best place to start.
Symbolic = Hands down their best, and my favorite extreme metal album ever. Phenomenal vocals, lyrics, and musicianship. A monster of an album.
Sound of Perserverance = Their swansong and second best. Although, the change in Chuck's vocals turned off some fans (he "shrieks" on this album instead of growling). Amazing album, though, and you need to listen to the cover of Judas Priest's Painkiller. It slays your face off.

Sound of Perseverance is by far my favorite record of theirs. It is a flawless album, through an through.

This thread should also the home for discussion of Control Denied, which was essentially Death with a clean vocalist.
Amazing band that could've taken the metal world by storm had Chuck not tragically passed away.

Chuck Schuldiner was such a genius... his lyrics, his compositions, his guitar playing, melodies, everything... I still can't believe he's gone  :(

Sound of Perseverance is my favorite. Symbolic is my 2nd fave. I was never really a fan of their first 2 death metal albums, to be honest. But everything after that was some of the most profoundly amazing music ever created.

RIP

The man died on my birthday. Lame as fuck. :tdwn

Wasn't there a good chance that Sound of Perseverance would have been the last Death album even if he hadn't passed? I remember reading somewhere that he just wanted to continue with Control Denied; and that he used some Control Denied ideas in SoP. I thought Symbolic was originally meant to be the final Death album if Chuck had had his way.

Edit: Looks like I misread your post. You meant Control Denied was the amazing band that could have taken the world by storm, or Death?

Perfect death metal, easily one of my fav bands and all albums are worth checking out. Amazing, vocals, guitar playing and stunning how chuck was mixing death metal and prog elements together.

My favs are TSOP, ITP, Symbolic and Human, but all albums are essential.  Can't believe Chuck is gone, one of the greatest tragedies ever.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

I was referring to Control Denied. They would've fit nicely with the likes of Nevermore, Iced Earth, Kamelot, Evergrey and so on.

As for deaths, Mr. Rogers died on my 18th birthday. An appropriate send-off of my childhood. :-[

I'm going to repeat something here that I've said several times before. Chuck Schuldiner was the greatest harsh vocalist to ever live. OF ALL TIME

Spiritual Healing was a masterpiece.  Unfortunately, with the departure of Bill Andrews and the progression of CS's voice from a growl to a screech, I really lost all interest.  I'm sure the later albums are fine, but Spiritual was really where they stopped being bad-ass to me.

Not gonna lie, their (his) 4 albums after Spiritual Healing contain some of the finest music ever crafted.
