Same. I've been listening to his debut quite a bit as I'm seeing him at ArcTangent festival next weekend  :metal really good stuff and I'm hoping he might play a few Oceansize songs as well

Vennart said that he had enough material for a double album, To Cure A Blizzard Upon A Plastic Sea did not seem that long with only 10 tracks. Good news, even though I would have been more excited if there were not 4 instrumentals out of 5.

bump.

album is out today.

Went through it once.

I enjoy a lot of it, as mixed as the styles of some of the songs seem to be.

Donkey Kong and Spider Bones are probably the 2 I enjoy the most. The 2nd half of Diamond Ballgag is something I think I'll regularly look forward to.

I haven't heard the entire Copeland EP, but I guess it was put up to stream yesterday.

He released a new album today and it is really good. Only one listen in but could see this become AOTY for me (though to be fair there's not that much competition this year). :)

Yea I gave it a spin earlier and liked it. I wasn't too fussed on his last record but loved The Demon Joke. Can't say it struck me as album of the year material but I'll 100% revisit.

Is it under something other than 'Vennart'? (I don't see it on apple music)

That being said, The Demon Joke was my favorite album a few years back.....such an underrated musician.

It's not on the streaming platforms I think, but it's on his bandcamp: https://vennart.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-dead-dead-wood
I pre-ordered the vinyl and the CD as well and got the digital download. :)

The Demon Joke was such a strong debut and To Cure a Blizzard Upon a Plastic Sea was even stronger for me. Only one listen of the new one so far but it feels the most like an Oceansize album out of the solo albums so far, a few tracks were giving me some Self Preserved vibes. The closer feels in line with the classic Oceansize closers. I don't think it will top Blizzard for me but what a great album. I think he's 3 for 3 so far, if he keeps putting out quality like this then Oceansize will soon be a distant memory.

I blew my chance at the white/black vinyl. Not really digging the new green edition. I did pick up the cd. Having said that:  :o the closing track  :o

Highly recommended album. Much stronger than Blizzard imo.

It doesn't have songs like Spider Bones, Diamond Ballgag, Immortal Soldiers or Robots in Disguise for me to put it on Blizzard's level but it is a very good album all the way through. Closing track is a stand out though personally I don't like the 30 seconds of silence followed by a hidden track which seems a bit weird.

Okay, now that I've had a second to digest this...I repeat, Holy Hell, what a freaking album.

As a huge Oceansize fan, I was elated when Vennart released 'The Demon Joke' a few years back. I listened to it to death, and while it very much felt like a 'solo' record, I enjoyed it immensely.

'To Cure a Blizzard,' on the other hand, just didn't do it for me. I've tried and tried (even gave it a spin this morning), but the record is just too all over the place for me. It's good, very well crafted, but a bit too 'noodley' for my taste.

That all being said, this latest release is not only my favorite of the bunch, but it is also the closest thing to an Oceansize album I've heard in years.

I mean, I get it, the dude was a huge part of that band, but there was something about the overall mix of those five guys (especially on 'Frames') that just can't be replicated...'In the Dead, Dead Wood' comes pretty damn close.

Kudos to whoever it was you said this might be their 'album of the year'.....I'm inclined to agree. For something that was apparently 'recorded quickly' (according to his liner notes), this sounds incredibly realized.

The whole thing is amazing, but as others have mentioned, the back half, especially that amazing closer, is amongst Vennart's best work to date.

The variety of Blizzard is what makes it a homerun for me. You got a nice mixture of different kind of tracks. There's some guitar heavy ones, some catchy ones and a few nice slower paced ones. Heck, even ends with an epic (at that point his longest solo song at least). The artwork feels representative of the whole album where you get splashes of different ideas and it just feels very colorful. My personal favorites would be Spider Bones (that chugging guitar and that glorious chorus), Diamond Ballgag (reminds me a bit of Oceansize through the verses and also has a huge chorus), Sentientia (amazing Cardiacs vibes) and Robots in Disguise just builds really nicely to me and sounds like it could have been an Oceansize track as well. Immortal Soldiers is another gem and the first half isn't without merit either, Donkey Kong has a really fun vibe to it.

The Demon Joke was huge for me when it came out and I still consider it a great album but it doesn't quite match the other 2 overall. It has some of his best solo tracks and I love Infatuate, Don't Forget the Joker and Operate. A Weight in the Hollow is really nice too. But overall I would say it also has his weakest solo tracks of the 3 albums - though I enjoy most of them.

The strength of the new one is that it feels cohesive and consistent. Not just quality wise but it has a 'sound' to it.

I need to get around to checking out Mike's stuff. I only know him as the unofficial 4th member of Biffy. I mean, I just saw the guy in concert not too long ago in Chicago. He plays with as much energy as the other 3. There were people making fun of him, but they clearly have no idea how long he has been there. They were calling him jumpsuit guy. Even I knew that was Mike Vennart.
beul ni teh efac = Lube In The Face / That has to be wrong.  :lol / EDIT: Oh, it's Blue! I'm an idiot.
Pardon the interruption, but I just had to run in and celebrate the majesty of Lube in the Face as highest moment in roulette history

yeah as he mentioned in that podcast, he's been playing with Biffy since 2010. Not new.

but yeah, definitely check out some of his solo music or British Theatre even if you already know Oceansize.

Despite my previous posts to the contrary, all three albums are, in my opinion, essential listening. In fact, at this point I'd probably choose Mike's solo work over Oceansize.

For anyone who follows him but isn't on bandcamp, he recently released an instrumental EP that is fan-freaking-tastic!

I haven't been able to really get into Biffy Clyro - not that their music is bad or anything but for me it's sort of a Foo Fighters scenario where the music is 'fine' but it lacks any sort of edge or creative uniqueness that catches my attention and makes me go "hey this stands out from the rest". With that said I'm really happy it pays the bills for Mike and Gambler and allows them to keep making their solo music on the side.
