What chord should this be?
« on: December 23, 2010, 07:52:38 AM »
I think I have a really good ear, but sometimes a simple song comes along that begs to differ.
I want to learn this song to play for my church. I'm sure not many here like country that much, but please listen to the chorus and tell me if the first chord would work better as a Dmaj7 or just a straight D.

I kind of like it as a DMaj7 but it's pretty hard to tell what it actually is there. I think it's DMaj7 but I'm not sure if I'm just imagining the C# in there or not. Go with the DMaj7 even if it's not that, it sounds nicer.

Yeah, it's hard to tell if you don't have perfect pitch. Dmaj7 does sound right though.

That's what I thought too. It just sounds a little weird when I play it since I don't have the full band behind me. I think the steel guitar and the other 500 guitars that are layered in make a big difference. Thanks.
By the way, what did you guys think of that song? I think there's a lot of cool songs in country music that tell stories.

I'll be honest, I gave the song a good listen. It's not bad by any means, it's just the style itself is not my cup of tea. Good song, though.

Yeah, I hated country my whole life, but about ten years ago I got offered a really good job in a country band. I took it as a business decision, but when I started putting my head and heart into it I really started to appreciate it. I think the lyrics are really clever a lot of time (you just have to understand that 90% of the artists don't write their stuff because the country industry has whole teams of songwriters who just sell songs to the artists), and it's just a lot simpler to listen to.
Plus, I can sing it better than I can sing DT or Moon Safari. :)

Haha, well...I have jammed with a few banjo players before and have done some amazing tunes with them. It's fun to play for sure. Maybe one day my tastes will acquire a liking for it more.

I actually really enjoyed it, I'd love to hear more of that kind of country as opposed to the more overt 'hillbilly' stuff that most people who hate it bring up. Dixie Chicks are one of my favourite bands as well, so I'm certainly open to it.

Cool. When I have a little more time I'll recommend you some good stuff. I've been out of the country loop for a couple of years but I still know some really good stuff.

Ok, here are a few. Keep in mind, most of these are just cool songs to sit and listen to, not go crazy over the instruments. Just cool lyrics and sometimes pretty sad, depending on your age and where you are at this point in your life...

Brokenheartsville by Joe Nichols

Then They Do by Trace Adkins

Concrete Angel by Martina McBride

One Last Time by Dusty Drake

Austin by Blake Shelton

There are a few to get you going.

Here is my advice: Whenever there is a possibility to utilize a maj7 chord, GO FOR IT!! Nothing sounds more epic :metal

Maj7 chord is seriously one of the most epic chords ever. Or how about a chord substitution and play a Fm9 over it instead ;)

Maybe too jazzy for that song

First of all, I hear a Db (or C#) chord. The guitar is downtuned half a step, but you probably knew that.

My speakers aren't so good, so I'm not sure if the instrumentalists are playing the major seventh.

The lead singer is, though. He's singing a C (or B#) at the word 'tree'.

It's the reason why a DbM7/C#M7 fits like a glove.

I actually really, really enjoyed all of those despite my prejudice against that kind of music (based on nothing admittedly), they were just so immediately nice to listen to. Any other recommendations? [/thread derail]

I didn't even think of that. That probably is why it sounds like a M7. Great ear, Mano!

I'll try to put together another little 'grocery list' for you. I'll probably put it in another thread and call it 'good country or something'.
