The Foo Fighters Thread
« on: December 22, 2010, 01:58:30 PM »
Amazed we don't have a dedicated thread already. Discuss/appreciate here.

New album coming out in the spring, wonder if it will be better than The Colour and the Shape, which is one of my favourites of all time. Dave Grohl has said it will be the heaviest yet.

Also, is there enough interest for me to do a survivor?

I'm a Foo-fan.
Favorite album would be "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace", i just think it's superb.
Not as big fan of the older stuff, but it's still good.
Favorite songs would be: Summer's End, Let It Die, The Pretender, Come Alive and Everlong.

I'm skeptical of the new material.  The last one just didn't do it for me.  Foo Fighters and Color and the Shape are two of my fav records ever, man those are amazing albums.  I can't help but feel that after that Dave is slowly loosing some of his creativeness.

I remember Dave saying that In Your Honor is by far their best album and the one they will go down in the history books for.  :lol

Interesting Dave says it's the heaviest material yet, I will keep an eye and ear out.  You think with all the mainstream success of the last one they would continue in a more generic softer, catchier direction.

I reckon they should get Pat Smear back in full time and get back to their Color and the Shape roots.

Very good band.

I thought Echoes was the best since TINLTL, better than the self-titled, and their third best overall.

The Colour and the Shape is really good, but Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace is definitely my favorite of theirs, too.  I find the rest of their albums to be rather spotty, but they all have some quality stuff on them.  Will definitely check this new one out. :)

I'm not the hugest Foo Fighters fan, but they have some good stuff.

Never tried their debut.

Colour and the Shape is definitely their best, and quite a solid album.

Nothing Left to Lose has a handful of good songs.

One by One would be my second favourite, and I think is almost as good as CATS.

In Your Honor is a tremendous mixed bag. When I listen to this album, I always get the feeling that Dave had written about six or seven softer songs and three or four heavier ones, and didn't want to make an imbalanced album. So he thought up the double album concept, and wrote the rest of the songs in one day just to fill the rest of it up. Many of the songs on the louder disc seriously sound like he wrote them in five minutes. The softer disc is much better though, and IMO is where Dave really had his heart on this album.

I gave the latest one a try, and it seemed totally boring and uninspired to me.

Also, their version of Have a Cigar with Brian May (I think it was?) was pretty cranking.

https://www.live4ever.uk.com/2010/11/dave-grohl-writing-silly-songs-for-new-foo-fighters-album/

Quote
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has said he is being urged to write more ‘silly’ songs as the band continue to work on the follow up to 2007′s ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace‘.

In an interview with NME, Grohl admitted he was asked by bass player Nate Mendel to try a less serious approach to his recent songwriting. “At one point Nate sent me an email, and said, ‘I really like it when you write songs that are silly and mean nothing, too,” he said. “You don’t have to try and write ‘Imagine‘ every time you sit down with a pen and paper.”

Grohl also further elaborated on his earlier claim that the new material would contribute to Foo Fighters’ ‘heaviest record yet’, saying the comments persuaded producer Butch Vig to ditch certain tracks. “When we were demoing we came up with all this heavy shit, so I said in an interview ‘this is going to be our heaviest record yet’,” he added.

“Butch saw it and then when I’d approach him with a new song idea, he’d say, ‘This doesn’t rock enough, no… Next.’ I’d have to show him another one.”

As well as his former Nirvana producer, the new album is also reported to be featuring Grohl’s former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic. In addition, Foo Fighters have announced two large outdoor UK shows at Milton Keynes Bowl on July 2nd and 3rd next year.

I agree with a lot of this, especially the new one being boring and uninspired.  One on One would be my third favourite, that's an excellent album, forgot about that one.

If you like CATS, you should check the debut, a wonderful album, so many great melodies.

You can definitely feel the Nirvana influence.  I just love the songs on this album.  The melodies on songs like I'll Stick Around, Alone + Easy Target, Good Grief and Wattershed are just flawless.

I'm a fan too. I don't really have any favourite album, rather than some great songs from all their albums. My Hero, Everlong, D.O.A., Up In Arms, The Pretender, and Learn To Fly are my favourites.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

It's not that i don't like the older Foo Fighters-stuff, but Echoes... is my favorite.
I just think it's flawless, i love all the songs individually, but together they form a very solid album.
Summer's End is my favorite FF-song, and i haven't yet heard another song by them that resembles it a bit, so i find it to be very unique.

Glad to see they've gone back to the original version of Everlong.

Great, I hated the version that they have been doing for years now, absolutely killed the song.

You know, I love Pat, but is three guitars really necessary?

How I would probably rank their albums.

One By One
The Color and the Shape

Foo Fighters
In Your Honor

There Is Nothing Left to Lose

Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace

I just found ESPG to be very underwhelming and predictable. Personally, I thought it was kind of dull.
One By One and TCatS are both fantastic. The debut is solid. In Your Honor has some great tracks. TINLtL has good moments, but I find that it drags at times.

I'm really hoping for great things on their next album.
