That's debateable. Frank Morgan plays both Professor Marvel and The Wizard, for obvious reasons, but Morgan also plays The Gatekeeper, The Carriage Driver, and The Guard, three characters in the Land of Oz. It's possible that the idea was that The Wizard liked to mingle with the common folk, and that "The Gatekeeper" is just one of his alter egos that he likes to employ.

That's just a theory of mine. I don't recall ever reading it anywhere, but I can't think of any other reason why the same actor would play so many characters. I figured maybe it really is The Wizard in cognito (barely) or something.

I think our son was seven or eight when he pointed it out to us. We were watching the movie (duh) and pointed out how the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion were all really the farm hands, each of whom had made some kind of remark to Dorothy regarding her brains, etc. Our son picked up on that and thought it was really cool. When they got to the big door and The Gatekeeper stuck his head out the hole in the door, our son said "Ha, it's Professor Marvel!" He thought part of the fun of watching the movie is seeing how many characters were played by the same actors... and he's right!
