Yea, but with time differences and all it might be handier to just send it out now. Just pm'ed you, can you let me know if it's okay? Chances are that someone else thought of the same song...

I didn't really think the song out, I just picked the song that sprung into my head first :p. Curious to what the other person has sent.

And now, off to bed.

Round 6: Instrumental songs…yep. Short write-ups cos it’s Christmas bro.

5 points

Sigz - Fennesz - Caecilia: Great song! An ambient piece with some electronic sounds/noises. I loved the soothing, almost relaxing atmosphere it had. The video was just horrible though. :lol

4 points

Portrucci - Nest - Moonbow: Another ambient song. The atmosphere, the melodies, the textures…everything was nearly flawless with this track. And while this song was quite long, it didn’t felt like it was dragging at any point to me.

Zantera - And So I Watch You From Afar - Clench Fists, Grit Teeth… GO!: I really liked that one. Some ballsy riffs, interesting drum patterns and some really good lead guitar parts. The breakdowns made it sound interesting all the way through.

3 points

Sonata - Anamaguchi - Airbrushed: HOLY BLEEPS BLOOPS BATMAN! A pretty cool, happy-sounding chiptune song there. My problem with most chiptune is that I get a feeling of it being incomplete, or unidimentionnal. But not this time, this song really had a full-sound impression to me.

Letters - This Will Destroy You - Burial on the Presidio Banks: Beautiful post-rock piece, starts relax with a big climax at the end. I loved the production, and how it’s the same theme/chord progression but the intensity varies up until the final section, the distortion part.

2 points

TheVoxyn - This Will Destroy You - Quiet: Another song by TWDY! The reason why this song only got 2 points and not 3 is because I felt like it was a bit too short, and that it didn’t have enough time to build and develop to the climax at the end.

SDN - Bryan Beller - Greasy Wheel: Cool song. It had a bit of a jazz-rock feel to it. The bass lines in this one were particularly good. The guitar/synth solos and lead parts were nice. But yeah, it was just that: nice. I guess it just didn’t grab me like the other songs!

1 point

Lat - Apocalyptica - One (Metallica cover): So this was a cover of One, by Metallica, only with cellos! They did a pretty good job with it. The thing is; I’m not a big fan of Metallica and while these guys are very talented, I just don’t see myself listening to this song very often.

Sigz: 21 points
Zantera: 21 points
Sonata: 20 points
SDN: 18 points
TheVoxyn: 16 points
Letters: 16 points
Portrucci: 16 points
Lat: 15 points

Round 7: Cover song. Very short write-ups this time. I don’t have that much time and I’m tired so ---

5 points

Sigz - The Cassettes - 43% Burnt (Dillinger Escape Plan): How they turn such a brutal piece to a beautiful folk song is completely over me. Great song all-around.

4 points

Portrucci - OSI - Set the Controls to the Heart of the Sun (Pink Floyd): So I actually prefer this version to the original. The vocals, the sounds, the production…perfect.

Sonata - Bright Eyes - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (D:): I loved how the sadness in this cover gave a whole new meaning to the lyrics. Vocals were great once again.

3 points

SDN - Jacob Moon - Come Talk to Me (Peter Gabriel): Pretty nice song. It’s hard to cover the voice of Peter but he did fairly well. The slap guitar was a plus too.

Lat - Alestorm - Wolves of the Sea (Pirates of the Sea): Enjoyable “Pirate Metal” song! The breakdown was probably the best part of the song.

2 points

TheVoxyn - Christopher O’Riley - Karma Police (Radiohead): I love the original so much that it really needed to be a special cover for me to enjoy it. It was a nice piano interpretation overall but nothing more than the song itself.

Zantera - Avenged Sevenfold - Flash of the Blade (Iron Maiden): Nothing mind-blowing about this one and the vocals were borderline bad at moments. OK cover.

1 point

Letters - Trivium - Iron Maiden (Iron Maiden): So this version sounded pretty much the same as the original. It didn’t add anything to it, IMO. Plus, I’m not a big fan of his growls.

Sigz: 26 points
Sonata: 24 points
Zantera: 23 points
SDN: 21 points
Portrucci: 20 points
TheVoxyn: 18 points
Lat: 18 points
Letters: 17 points

FINAL ROUND HOLY CRAP: Open round. And please, for those of you who can’t mathematically win, try to send the best song anyway!

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I hate versions like that by newer bands. They just lower the key by a half step or two and just replay the song note for note. Iced Earth did that with "Hallowed By Thy Name" and Killswitch Engage did the same with "Holy Diver".

I wanted to send something out fast since I would be at my parents, and I saw that Karma Police was his most listened song by Radiohead.

All of his covers are awesome though.

I hope i end up higher this time.
Last round i had to send a cover i don't even like that much myself, because i have a major lack of covers in my library, so i figured better something then nothing.
Probably ruined my chances of winning this though, so disappointed at myself.  :-[

Round 8: Open. Final round guys! It wasn’t an easy ranking this time…

5 points

TheVoxyn - VNM Nation - Illusion: This one connected with me somehow. Great, great song. A bit of a slow-paced piece with a solid chorus and good instrumentation all-around. The vocals were great, not really expressive but intense and emotional. The melodies were great too.

4 points

Letters - maudlin of the Well - Birth Pains of Astral Projection: maudlin is a band I’ve been meaning to check out since quite some time because I love Toby Driver’s work and avant-garde is my favorite genre. This one started with a chill-out, and then goes all over the place. Death growls, acoustic passages, clean vox, heavy riffs and so on. Very good song.

Zantera - The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony: This song is quite popular I believe. The strings in the beginning and through-out the song are really memorable. The production/mix is a highlight for me with this one. The song is simple yet effective. It’s just a well-written song, well-executed.

3 points

Lat - Novembre - Nothijngrad: I quite enjoyed this prog/death metal song. There was some great riffs in there! The vocals were really deep and the harsh/clean vocal ratio was good. If I had to chose one word to describe this song it would be nostalgia. Which is not a bad thing!

Sonata - The Depreciation Guild - Heavy Eyes: I didn’t even know that it was a chiptune song until I checked it out! Mainly because there was other influences in the mix. There were some interesting samples and the electronic sound it had gave it an unreal, almost ethereal feel.  Vocals were great also.

2 points

Sigz - Made Out of Babies - Cooker: Love that one. I came close to putting it at 3 points. The quirky guitar part and the beginning really set the tone for the whole thing. I’m a big fan of female screams and this was no exception; Great harsh vocals! I thought that her clean voice was not as convincing though.

Portrucci - Tangerine Dream - Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares: I’ve heard about Tangerine Dream for so long that I’m glad I’m finally able to check them out! This one was an ambient/electronic song with soothing sounds and a great atmosphere. The thing is that I felt like something was missing. In the middle the pace changed and seemed to be leading to something else but it just returned to the main theme after a while. That’s why this one got 2 points.

1 point

SDN - Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland: OK, so this was a quite nice rock song. It had an “epic” feel to it and some good song-writing too.  However, I’m not a big fan of the vocals here and I felt like the song was inconsistent a bit. That wasn’t a bad song by any mean though!

Sigz: 28 points
Sonata: 27 points
Zantera: 27 points
TheVoxyn: 23 points
SDN: 22 points
Portrucci: 22 points
Lat: 21 points
Letters: 21 points

So that’s the end! Congratulations to Ian! That was a really fun roulette and I’ve discovered plenty of amazing bands along way. Thank you everyone for participating! :tup
