I told myself next gen I'm NOT starting off with a Nintendo console

Ah, but who am I kidding? Of course I'll get it.

Oh, and my wii has pretty much kicked the bucket. I dunno if its the homebrew acting up or if my wii is simply just too old and is about to die, but games are freezing up, system menu occasionally won't load, etc. I'll have to try and do some hacking and get it back up to par, but I'm too afraid to tinker with anything and make it worse.  :lol

Does anyone here ever do speed runs? The only game I've tried it much with is the original Super Mario Bros. from 1985. I believe the best possible time(as in executing EVERY single jump, action, etc. as flawlessly and time-efficiently as possible as determined by the game's engine) is 5:03. This is of course taking this level sequence:

1-1,1-2(warp to 4-1), 4-1, 4-2(warp to 8-1), 8-1, 8-2, 8-3, 8-4

At least two dudes have already posted this time under official conditions as in playing it on a real NES that has no tool assistance at all. The best I've done yet is two different runs that were timed in the 6:55-7:00 range.

So, anyone else have anything to contribute regarding speed runs?

I've actually never attempted a speed run... I simply don't have the patience because I would get frustrated after one go and then just give up.  :lol

Yeah. Unless you're one of those weirdos that never emerges from your mom's basement except for the occasional con then the average Joe's list of games they could capably attempt a speed run at is likely very limited.

I only suggest speed run attempts on games that you've played so exhaustively over the years that you can effortlessly shred through at least the first third to half of it. It also may help to start with older, simpler games that can be completed in less than an hour since it's a lot more bearable to lose 45 minutes of your time because of a critical error than to lose for instance 2 or 3 hours if you were doing an RPG speed run.

Just got the last green star in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Then I tried The Ultimate Test. Holy shit, it's hard. I can't imagine how difficult The Perfect Run will be.

I must be the only person in the world who finds Mario challenging. Because I still have not beaten Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Dude. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is fucking hard as shit. I need to get the final star because when you do, the game sends your Wii a message telling you how long it took you to beat the game, and the total number of times you died. :lol I'll post it when I finally beat The Perfect Run.

Actually, I've beaten the first Super Mario Galaxy 100%; maybe it'll tell me as well. Let me check.

.............

The first Mario Galaxy took me 23 hours and 20 minutes to beat fully, and I died 126 times. I imagine that death count is at least tripled for Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The other day when I was watching the Heat play I realized that if you finish a level in Super Mario Bros. with the last digit on the clock matching the jersey number of any of the big three you get that many explosions:

Chris Bosh=1 explosion
Dwayne Wade=3 explosions
LeBron James =6 explosions

I never did play that game.

Still though, as good as Kirby Wii looks, I can't help but ask myself "do we really need TWO Kirby games on one console?" I'm really surprised they're not pushing this back to be a Wii U launch title or something.

Why must the Wii U limit one new controller per console?  :(

That pretty much eliminates the multiplayer shooter action it could have had and instead replaces it with either 1. Hide and seek kind of games where one person has the Wii pad and the rest have wiimotes, or 2. games where you're all using wiimotes and not using the Wii pad at all.

Also I thought the one of the things that would make Madden preferable on the Wii over the other systems was the ability to call your plays on the Wii pad screen, but now one person will still have to pick their plays on the big screen anyway.

I hadn't hear d that, bu not having the ability to have more than one of those controllers at one time would be a huge mistake on Nintendo's part.

I think from a technical standpoint having more than one would be difficult if you need to use the TV in conjunction with the controller. Like you need to position the controller so that you're directly facing the TV.

But I'm not sure about other types of games.

Yeah I'm still hoping you can use more than one.  But with Smash Bros yet to begin production, and the Zelda footage confirmed to be a tech demo, I may have to wait for a price drop on this one since it's doubtful I'll pick it up at launch.

I know for a fact I won't get one at launch. I never get a new system at launch. I wait a year or so until it has a decent lineup of games. I did that with the Game Boy Advance, the DS, the Gamecube, and the Wii. I'll probably get a Wii U in late 2013.

I've gotten the Gamecube and Wii at launch, so I will probably get the WiiU at launch as well, finances permitting.

I didn't get a DS until last summer, but I hope to get a 3DS before it is out for 6 years.  :lol

I'll get a 3DS when these games are released:

Luigi's Mansion 2
Ocarina of Time 3D
Star Fox 64 3D
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Mario Kart 3DS
Super Mario
Super Smash Bros 4
And another game I remember being excited about but can't think of right now

What a hell of a line-up that is. :caffeine:

They also said the console is still heavily in development and that nothing is certain.

Nintendo really, really needs to rethink this whole one person per console thing.  Wii demolished the rest of the market because it had the best multiplayer with actual people in a room with you.  Why does it make sense from a business or creative standpoint to completely abandon the primary source of your success?

It's definitely stupid, but it's probably more driven by technical limitations than business or creative decisions; Rendering anywhere between three and five separate HD channels and then wirelessly streaming all but one of those to the controllers is most likely too demanding in terms of processor power.

Of course it's still on them as to why they would choose to proceed with an idea that can't be fully realized due to technology.

maybe they're thinking about multilplayer in a "bigger than your living room" kind of way and finally catching up to the online gaming that they're famously shitty at.

The fact that Nintendo felt that it had to drop the price that drastically after only a few months is telling enough. I just think these dedicated handheld gaming devices are becoming more and more niche as iDevices increasingly get into the hands of people everywhere.

True, although the 3DS was way overpriced to begin with.

Wonder if the Vita will have a market either.
