Yes, but LTL already gets plenty of that.  Most appreciation threads are for songs that people feel may not be getting enough appreciation already.

But again, hey, whatever.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Well  we were all nerd raging over LTL not making moffatt's top 50 and the thread devolved after that, so a topic needed to be made :P

One of DT's best.  All time.  Appreciation well deserved.  Thank you.  That's all.

Definitey one of the band's best two or three songs; it is awesome in every way.

Also, I think the F# gets overstated.  This song is awesome from start to finish, yet it seems like that is the first thing people think of when this song is mentioned.  Honestly, I had been listening to this song for over 10 years before I even heard about this F#, and then I didn't even know where it was for a while after that.  When I figured it out, I was like, "Oh yeah, that part is cool," but I don't touch myself at night thinking about it like others seem to.  Just saying, is all...;) :p

Woah woah waahh.

I would kill to see an inform James hit that note live.

Evident that DT needs more JMX lyrics.

I would love to have professional video footage of the KM-era DT doing this song. I was disappoint when they said on the Tokyo DVD commentaries that the encore from that show was LtL but it didn't get included. But the LSFNY version is great too.

This will be some of the unfortunate fall-out from the MP departure; probably little chance of getting updated/improved versions of prior releases.

Oh, and can someone tell me again why the F# has yet to be featured on a DVD? Every live version we have of that song, James opts out and tries something different in that spot. OK, well, technically only 2 full versions: Live Scenes from New York and Bucharest. Still . . .

Didn't realize it wasn't appreciated. The intro kinda irks me, but other then that, it's awesome.

It's really hard for me to rank DT songs but I think Learning To Live would probably come in number 1.

I've never had a problem listening both independently. WFS and LTL are fantastic songs, but not indispensable to each other.

LTL works perfectly on its own; the WFS part is a nice addition but it doesn't make it necessary to listen to WFS beforehand every time I want to hear LTL imo.

WFS just leads into LTL so perfectly.  If I listen to LTL on it's own, I feel like I'm starting the song in the middls.

OH MY GOD

If you haven't listened to the YtseJamRecords Bootleg for New York 1993, it will BLOW YOUR MIND.  Learning to Live is now officially my favorite DT song!  :metal :2metal: :metal :2metal: :metal :2metal: :metal :2metal: \m/

Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I'm not saying it's bad. I've grown used to it. But initially I felt that getting the song off to it's dramatic interlude faster would've helped, especially coming right off of WFS. But that portion is by no means bad. I've grown quite a custom to it.

Holy crap, this is the best version of LtL I've ever heard. I can't get over how just... absoultely stunning it is. I just wish the bass was higher in the mix, because this is honestly one of my favorite basslines.

As good as it is, it is kind of pointless to the song. If he hit an F# while singing the chorus, it would be completely different.

Pretty much what I said.  I agree.
I sooo disagree. In my mind, you have quite a big, instrumental build-up, with the vocals adding the final, epic touch before one of the most moving solo's Petrucci has ever done. Without the WOAH's, the solo wouldn't have felt so epic.

Amazing song!

Didn't understand the beauty for it until just recently.

This song is really beautiful. Everything about this song, I should say, is really beautiful. The chorus gets me every time and the instrumental sections is amazing.

Also, one of the greatest Labrie notes ever to be hit. And the guitar solo, WFS reprise, and the ending is super glorious. Definitely one of the songs I'd enjoy listening to over and over again.

It is truly an epic lots of instrumental passages and the breakdown is awesome plus that Waiting for sleep theme made it more epic.

Mega bump is mega
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Missed this originally.

If I was forced to say what my favorite DT song is, I'd probably say this. The "outro" feels like it keeps going after the "chorus," even though JLB has some incredible vocals. Only thing that holds it back is production IMO.

Herrick's second favorite song from Images and Words. It's kind of a weird song with that one heavy section with the cool rhythm. Or maybe the song isn't weird but that heavy section is? Great song!

Also, I don't mind when an old thread is bumped.
