Might as well. From my perspective, I just want to hear some cool new music, especially stuff I might not check out otherwise. The ratings are secondary to me, though I definitely understand wanting to win.

Huh, weird! Well, I'm getting it now. And I'm about to buy Brooke Fraser's Flags after listening to about 3/4 of it on Grooveshark. Girl can write songs!

Nice.  Yeah for sure she can.  Its a grower, is Flags.  If you like that, you might like her previous album Albertine, its a lot different from Flags in terms of style, but I think its ultimately better.  It also has the nicest drum sound ever committed to tape.

Sent.  Bit of a risk, I believe, but its off one of the few albums I bought this year (not too big of a music year for me, sadly), and its the only song from that album I listen to with any kind of regularity.  Its a pretty epic song though, hope you find some enjoyment.

Sweet, I'll check it out after I give Flags the proper treatment.

4 Points – letters – Katatonia – Omerta
I told you I liked this song! The “Why have you waited so long?” refrain has been stuck in my head all weekend. The vocalist’s voice is perfect for this track. It’s a pretty simple song, and while I don’t think the guitar solo/interlude is the greatest ever it provides some nice variation. Not much else to say really, the song is very solid. They don’t usually play music like this though, right?
No, they don't usually play stuff like that. They're still very good though, and I'd definitely recommend checking them out.

Anti, Trevor Rabin is the guitarist from the 80's incarnation of YES.  He's gone on to work doing movie soundtracks.

The CD Kev took it from was released in 1989.  Here's the wiki page.

Cool, glad you appreciated my song, it's definitely one of my favourites ever under 3 mins! The verses are quirky and the chorus is epic.

Also, I think you've done the points wrong. I haven't checked anyone else's, but I should be on 9, not 8. :P

1 Point – SoundscapeMN – Kevin Gilbert – Suit Canon
Holy polyphony, Batman! This song has a few things going against it – Not really a fan of the polyphony, and I’m definitely not a fan of much a cappella anything, although it is impressive to hear. Also, the little circus bit at the end confused me. I gotta say, the song wasn't my cup o' tea.

that's a little unexpected given you've expressed your interest and appreciation for Vocal Harmonies. It's actually a song that was used for a Gentle Giant Tribute record. Are you not a fan of Gentle Giant?

And even though it's not doing much for you (at this point), might I ask, how much Kevin Gilbert music have you heard before? because I would definitely not write him off solely based on your initial impression of this song.

I suspect if you listened to this (slightly different) version of this song within hearing the entire The Shaming of the True album, your opinion of it and I imagine Kevin's music could easily change.

I haven't really listened to Gentle Giant, no. And I dunno, it was a fugue (was it actually a fugue in form or just name?), and those kind of things just sound like exercises to me. Like I find it hard to respond emotionally to it, which is usually important for me.

And don't worry, I haven't written anyone off. I wouldn't dare from one song. What kind of music did he play usually?

yeah it is a "Fugue" or rather the version on Shaming is titled "Suit Fugue (Dance of the A&R Men)" anyway. An "excercise"? well I suppose in a way you could describe it as that. It's kind of a demonstration of layers of different vocal lines, and in this case, it's to demonstrate a smothering of voices desiring to all get your or the main character's in the story in the album, time attention and influence. It's really like an exposure of how the music industry is a short-attention-spanned, style over substance, 15 minutes of fame, experience. And how A&R Men wield a lot of that (negative) influence on an impressionable musician.

But as far as Kevin's music it self, that song, while many regard it as 1 of his most creative pieces, is hardly indicative of even the rest of the Shaming record, let alone his other work. Toy Matinee for example, is really cleverly written (although could be called 80's-tinged) pop. Thud is a very lyric-driven, singer/songwriter record. And Shaming is kind of all over the map, but it's a big concept album that you could say is Kevin's Quadrophenia or The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, in a way.

I know you know Spock's Beard and Transatlantic..and Genesis, Yes, etc. and his music appeals to people into those groups especially (among many others).
