Leonard Cohen
« on: October 20, 2010, 10:59:05 PM »
Oh my God. Why haven't I heard from him before? This guy is a GENIUS!

The past month there has always been a song from him on my playlist.

He does suffer from the Bob Dylan syndrome: terrible voice but a talent for poetry and melody that is incredible. There's a CD of just covers called "Reprises"... fantastic.

Current favourite song: Anthem
Especially on the Reprise version sung by her back vocalists. Gorgeous.

Any other fan here?

I used to listen to him, and you're spot-on about the voice/poetry. He has some fantastic lyrics, but his voice is the main reason why I couldn't put up with listening to him.

I enjoy reading his lyrics, at least.

The guy has published many books and won awards in Canada, his hometown.

This guy is an artist where anyone can make arrangements of his songs and just benefit from his genius. Take R.E.M. for example, "First We Take Manhattan" is to die for.

I'm really happy with this discovery :)

His genius can NEVER be over-estmiated.

I'd love to see him live one day.

I'm not kidding either.

Very sad news  :'(
I can't say I expected him to leave us so soon. I love his work and appreciate what he has given the world. Death and mortality where two constant subjects in his music but it is inevitable for all of us
"The thing that kills me is all these bands that use huge words in their lyrics, 'I'm swimming in a vortex of apathy.' I'm like, 'What?' I don't walk up to a friend and go 'That's a stylin' looking vortex of apathy you've got there pal. I was swimming up a river of deceit myself."

He pulled a Bowie and put out one more great record (alluding to his own end) before he passed.

Give You Want It Darker a spin if you haven't yet.

Still remember discovering Leonard Cohen back in 1980. Final year of high school and I just got into Dylan. Watching the movie McCabe and Mrs Miller on late night TV and completely blown away by the soundtrack. Checked the end credits for who did the music. Leonard Cohen - First time I had seen his name. A couple of weeks later I bought Greatest Hits (still have that copy). Still love it. The Bird on a Wire doco. DVD is worth getting if you're a fan.

Regret never seeing him perform live.

RIP  :'(

Seeing Cohen live was a fucking religious experience. Caught him on his last tour. We had seats literally at the last row in the back of the Nokia Theater in LA.. and he made it feel as if you were sitting on stage with him. So fucking amazing. Panda turned me on to him right before that... but after seeing him live I became slightly obsessed. The man wasn't just a song writer... he was a fucking beautiful poet. I would sell my soul to have even 1/10th the talent with words he had.

I shed a fucking tear this evening when I learned.

Devastating.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
