Metallica Fan Pays $35,000 For Drum Lesson With Lars Ulrich
« on: October 14, 2010, 05:51:15 PM »
Metallica fan paid $35,000 for an hour-long drumming lesson with Lars Ulrich.

The one-on-one class with the heavy metal star was auctioned off for the huge sum as part of a charity fundraising scheme by tennis player Andre Agassi and his Foundation for Education.

Before the auction ended, bidders were told they would be treated to a rock star lifestyle for a day for pledging the highest amount.

The advert read: "Want to be a rock star for a day? This is the experience you never dreamed money could buy.

"You and your guest are headed to Metallica headquarters in San Francisco. Here you will meet the co-founder of one of the greatest rock bands of all time; Lars Ulrich.

"Lars will begin your unbelievable day with a tour of Metallica headquarters, which includes Metallica's recording studio, rehearsal space and home of their fan club. Once inside the studio, you will have the privilege of receiving a one-hour private drumming lesson from one of the greatest drummers of all time.

"After Lars shows you a thing or two, you and your guest will join him for a private lunch. Almost too extraordinary to believe!"

The 46-year-old drummer's gift was auctioned off during the Grand Slam for Children benefit gala at the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas - which eventually collected over $8.5 million with the help of global stars.
I love Metallica, and I get this was for charity, but taking lessons with him? :lol

It's an awesome idea, and great for the charity, so I'm going to overlook the obvious flaw.

I guess for the fan and being it's for chairty it's a win win!

But the thought of lunch and a drum lesson with Lars for 35K is laughable.  :lol  I'd just be wishing for him to shutup the whole time at lunch.

What the fan doesn't know is that Lars requires him to wear his leotard for the lesson and Lars will be standing on the bass drum in his towel. (For anyone that has seen that awful picture)

Lars - First lesson, the snare drum. Incidentally, there is only one lesson.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I think it is cool he did this for charity and I would've payed for the tour of the HQ, I wouldn't have given a dollar for a drum lesson from him though.

Why? You don't wanna learn how to horribly butcher entry-level double bass beats? And do the same fill in every song?

I think the fan shouldn't have paid him to teach him drums, but it's his money, lars may have learned a thing or two.

Not sure I get the Lars hate. His early stuff is fine, technique wise (Whiplash, Ride the Lightning, Disposable Heroes, AJFA) and sure he isn't as good as he once was, but to still be playing in Metallica for however many years, in front of massive audiences and still putting on a good show...I'd just like to see where the hate is coming from? I'm hardly a Metallica fan-boy either.

I don't think he's that bad either. I just would never make it through a lesson of his without shouting "Shut the fuck up! "

Yeah his personality is irritating for sure. He can't help but sound like a spoiled little brat most of the time. But the majority of people are commenting on his drumming. I am a drummer personally, and I love his work. It's always great fun to play.

I, for one, hate Lars on a personal level.

Furthermore, I think his playing is horrendous and childlike.

And I'm going to SAY SO without being a total vagina about it.

This is fucking hilarious. It's like asking the class idiot how to solve a complicated math problem.

Fan: Dude, teach me how to do the machine gun double bass in One!
Lars: Uhh, that was done by a drum machine, not by me, so... sorry, bro. I can teach you how to play Enter Sandman, though! Since it's... the only song I can play nowadays.

Watch the live Damaged Justice Seattle concert they released on DVD.  Lars is playing the beats from the album in the pocket and with the right feel.  Then watch Lars play now.  I think the hate directed at him isn't because he doesn't play drums well.  It's that he used to be a great drummer, let his skills atrophy through laziness, and rationalizes this by saying he was never the best drummer in the world.

Talking to him about drums would be interesting.  He's created some really iconic beats.  But a drum lesson?  I don't understand what he has to teach.
