I agree Aerosmith is definitely in the running.  Back when I was in HS (the 70s), they practically rivalled Zeppelin in popularity.  And they've had the reslience to pull off numerous top 10 hits throughout the 80s and 90s.  Never mind that their sound got more commercial, it was still good old-fashioned hard rock/blues.  Not too many bands were able to pull that off over the course of 3 decades.

Dream Theater ranks with any of them but for the sake of pop music reality, they are excluded.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too.
