Well, the Dead made an album called American Beauty.  And Workingman's Dead was a tribute to the American laborer.  Songs like Cumberland Blues spoke to the plight of the coal-miners.

This !!!  hugely successful since the 70's, one of the first true American Hard Rock and Roll bands, being called the US version of the Stones. Although they turned a poppy this only added to their fan base. Their last two albums have them trying to go back to their 70's/80's roots without losing their later fans.

There's no way any group could reach a concensus here, lots of string contenders already mentioned.  My personal choice would be Van Halen, but I wouldn't argue with most of the other choices like Aerosmith, CCR, Metalica, and the like.

I thought about the Eagles but for some reason thought they had at least one member not from the US so discounted them. I might dock them a few points for only having 6(?) albums during their main run. But those were all popular and well-received albums.

All this Aerosmith talk is disheartening. Maybe I never game them a fair shake, but dang I never liked them.

I worked for Bill Graham Presents for a couple of years, and the one requirement was that you had to work all Dead shows, so about 20 of those I've sees I actually worked.

I saw aerosmith at the beginning and just skipped the entire thread to say that aerosmith has to be one of my least favourite bands of all american bands that exist. I would say Cake over aerosmith. Or Jmmiy Eat World. Just 2 random bands that I thought of that I like better then arrowsmith

I have to say Aerosmith even though I'm not a big fan. They are the most influential band and the most quoted or commercially used band in existance. My favorite is easily Van Halen or The Cars but outside my own opinion I have to say Aerosmith is the greatest American Rock Band ever.

Springsteen/Metallica for sure, in terms of embodying America and really living up to the word 'great' instead of a personal favourite. (even though both are)

Tool are my favourite band ever, but they don't qualify for this title IMO as there's no specific American...ness about them.
