I've tried getting into Symphony X but I just couldn't do it.

Try harder.

Solution .45. Their debut album is one of my favorites of all-time.

Yeah, the lack of love for this album makes me sad.  One of the top 5 albums this year.

Divine Wings of Tragedy/The Odyssey.

I can get why someone would dig them but I can't listen to Allen's vocals for that long. Sorry  :| I don't really like prog metal that much though....

I recommend some of his less harsh vocals: listen to The Damnation Game

I was like that at the start, for some reason I just couldn't stand his vocals, I don't remember why but I couldn't.  One day it just clicked and now I think he is one of the best singers around today.

I think it was actually the Russell Allen/Jorn Lande albums that really made me appriciate his voice, give them a go, it's more melodic and even AOR but great songs, solos and vocals.  It gives you a different perspective on his voice than SX.

I really like Shadow Gallery too... I already got 2 albums and I just ordered Room V purely on hearing the track 'Rain' via Youtube.  Great stuff!

I haven't heard all of them except for Symphony X, so yeah.

Shadow Gallery is amazing too.

Heard all of them, like all of them. But my favourite non-DT prog metal band has to be Psychotic Waltz.

Another decent prog band that gets no recognition is Sieges Even.
Yes! Sieges Even is awesome.

What do Soundscape sound like? I can't watch youtube videos or listen on Myspace.

Can you listen online with anything?

they're a bit like Fates Warning, but at times they use a lot of heavy, fat-synths.

Pretty much, all of the bands mentioned are some of the most recognized in the scene right now.  They're also all VERY typical, cookie cutter prog, I think.

I feel like Fates Warning deserves at least a little more love for at least being a little more adventurous and less typical than other progressive metal bands.

Out of those choices, it's Symphony X, easily.
Before anyone mistakes me for some kind of Symphony X fan, I'd just like to point out that I never said that. :P

What era FW?  Either way, I'm probably sold.

hmm, I suppose the closest would be records like Perfect Symmetry and Parallels, but they actually covered "Fata Morgana" on a Fates Warning tribute album, adding touches of keyboards to it in fact.

I mean they also could compare to bands like Marillion, Enchant, Kansas, Queensryche, and even Rush at times. They sort of tip-toe the line between prog and hard rock at times.

They released 2 albums (both clocking in at close to 80 minutes)

has to be..

Symphony X

Off the choices, Symphony X is beyond anything else really, recognition-wise too, so having them in the mix is a little unfair thb :) But they still get my vote, since the other bands are little too inconsistent to get the vote.

Redemption hands down for me

I've tried getting into Symphony X but I just couldn't do it.

This... the production on the albums always seems so thin to me and sorry not into Yngwie clones  ...let the flame war begin
Other.

John Arch-era Fates Warning or Into the Woods... would have to take it. Not a fan of the other bands.

John Arch Era Fates is what got me into Prog-Metal....Ray is great, but it was John that I always go back to

I didn't like John Arch.  Very typical speed metal falsetto screaming.  For the direction they would take, I think they really needed a singer with a lot more substance and versatility.  They found it  :)

Ray era FW just doesn't have the magic or power that John era FW did. And JA definitely fit that kind of Fates Warning to perfection imo

Sad that no one seems to know Into the Woods... though  :(

Saw a lot of talk of them...listened to a couple of albums (Wings/Twilight and V) and actually bought the live album, they honestly did nothing for me. Having grown up during the Shrapnel Years ( MacAlpine/Moore/Friedman/Becker) Romeo brought nothing new to the table that 100's of other guitarists weren't already doing

have you heard A Twist of Fate, John Arch's EP? or even for that matter, those auditions he did for Dream Theater.

How could I forget Evergrey.  In Search For Truth and Recreation Day are two of the best prog metal albums ever.  A truly amazing band.

Fuck man, those four are like the big four of shred guitar IMO.  Macalpine, Moore and Becker were soooooo underrated.  Shame about Becker, he truly was gifted.  Macalpine might be my favourite solo instrumental guitar player, his albums and songs are truly amazing.

Misspelled it before lol, its "In the Woods..." (The ellipse is part of their name for some reason)

I'd recommend just getting the entire album "Heart of the Ages".

In The Woods... - Yearning the seeds of a new dimension

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QydUu2uAhYU
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oe_HxN9wi0&feature=related

Its got some harsh vocals and junk, but this song is an absolute masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

While I think Redemption is a much more intelligent band, Symphony X still trumps them, imo.
However, the next Redemption album, whenever it comes out, could be the killer album that rockets Redemption way up in my rankings.

While Romeo might not be an exact Yngwie clone, Symphony X's music is basically an extension of the neo-classical metal style that Malmsteen made his name from.
