Lie -- difficult-to-hear lyrics
« on: October 06, 2010, 03:57:38 PM »
So I have had a constant question in my mind, and I actually posted this in a recent thread, but no one responded.

Lie's written chorus is this:

Don't tell me you wanted me
Don't tell me you thought of me
I would
I swear I would
(Did)
I'll try
I swear I'll try
(Lie)

However, when I listen to the song, I can't hear "did" or "lie."  Are they backing vocals, like the "love, deceit, death" part in Home's chorus?

EDIT:  just fixed up a lyrical problem

Thats weird. I tried listening to it and couldn't hear anything either. I wonder if there's some story behind it.

I'll have to listen tonight.

This happens occasionally, Barenaked Ladies' One Week (which was a really popular song) has entire verses of lyrics that aren't in the song. I've never heard an explanation for those.

i noticed that a long time ago and it has always tugged at the back of my mind
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Whoa, that's weird.  I just listened to it several times in headphones cranked up and heard nothing.

Maybe it's Myung singing it.

But if Myung sang, your head would cave in from the sheer awesome power.

Same with Porcupine Tree's "The Nostalgia Factory."

I can hear someone repeating "lie" in the left channel after the 2nd and final choruses (2.28-2.37 and 4.48-4.58). I can also hear "did" in the final chorus (4.38-4.43). It's in the left channel too.

When I first got the album when it came out eons ago I wondered it at the time. Will have to take a close listen to see if it's actually whispered or something.

I thought for years it was cause the first chorus they say the first line (won't and try) and the second chorus they say the second line (don't and lie).. but i heard it now and i was wrong hahaha. (i really don't pay attention to the singing, just the music)

now.. i have a new theory.. the first line is what they say as a lie (won't and try), and the second line that you don't hear is the true (don't, lie). Yep.. this work for me.

I faintly hear the "d" in "Did" in the first chorus, but I can't hear a "Lie" at all.

Yeah, I saw that thread, but it went off on a major tangent so I decided to make it again.

I hear it say "Lie" both times in the chorus that starts at 2:01. I used headphones.

I used headphones and can't here anything that sounds like any of that. I always assumed like most artist, the lyrics printed were the intended lyrics. They just didn't end up that way on the album but it was already being printed up.

Could you clarify?  Is it a drawn out "Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeee" or a short "Lie"?  And when in the chorus is it, exactly?

Look at my previous post in this thread, there are timestamps. Also, it's repeating "lie" many times. They aren't "LLLLIIIIIEEE", they are quite short.

I probably need a good set of earphones to hear this, I'm unable to make out any of the "lie" or "did" with my earbuds.

I just tried it while tuning out the right speakers and I heard the "lie, lie, lie" and the "did, did, did" as well. Pretty cool.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Ah I was finally able to make it out and did the same thing you did tri.ad, tuned out the right channel and could make out the 'lie'. It sounds like Kevin Moore may have said those.

Still can't hear it.  Is the "lie, lie, lie" on the beat?

It's most definitely James LaBrie.
