I assume in this thread you are asking for 5 star albums? Here is a couple of mine:

Neu! - Neu 75

-early proto-punk mixed with ambient and effect looping. not a bad track on here (only 6 tracks) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FbmTmCnwEk

Ton Steine Scherben - Keine Macht für Niemand

-awesome early 70's groovy blues rock. Just a superb use of guitar on this album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnOZbIkcxXk

on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

Ulver - Perdition City is also incredible.

This man speaks the truth. It also has one of the best album openers ever.

Radiohead - The Bends
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream

The albums share some similarities here and there, and SW references to The Bends in 'Pure Narcotic'. I can really hear Radiohead's influence shining through on the album. Yet PT are so good that it's by no means unoriginal or bland. These two albums perfectly present something I really like: passionate, moody, sometimes anthemic and heavy music, yet still light and dreamy in feel.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Might as well.

I mean, you would sooner or later. Start with their second phase, A Farewell To Kings/Hemispheres/Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures. Then go back and forward an album each - 2112 and Signals; then again - Caress Of Steel and Grace Under Pressure; and once more - Fly By Night and Power Windows. If you dig them a lot by then, get their first, self-titled debut album and their last album under the Mercury label Hold Your Fire, which ends their third phase.

If you REALLY like them, go into their fourth phase, which starts with their first release on Atlantic, Presto. Everything from there forward is a bit different each album, and an interesting progression that shows how the band has become who they are today. Do all of this in the next 8-10 months before their 18th studio album comes out, Clockwork Angels.

You won't look back, but you will wonder why you never had their whole discography before today.

Oh FYI everyone, although all prog contributions are welcome, what I'm looking for is neither restricted to nor exclusive of prog bands. :tup

In that case:

Banghra - la Danza Del Vientre (if you learn how to bellydance from this, women will bow down to you)
Andrew WK - The Wolf
Bond - Born (Classical/Techno Fusion with Hot chicks)
Josh Groban - Closer
Hoobastank - Every Man for Himself
The 69 Eyes - Devils (Semi-Goth Rock and Roll)

Opeth - Still Life easily, but I think you already have that.

How about Led Zep 4? Or Powerslave by Iron Maiden.
Also, Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime.

If you're looking for something jazz-inspired with a bit of blue-grass and international instrumentation, pick up Bela Fleck & The Flecktones' Live At The Quick, it's easily one of my favorite albums of all time, and it shows how great the band is in a live situation with a whole slew of back-up performers that bring the songs to life. Also, Victor Wooten is just simply amazing. His solos bring tears to my eyes and chills across my skin.

I'd also suggest any of the "Time" albums by Dave Brubeck. Great jazz with time-signature explorations. There are a few tunes that venture into common time, but mostly it was Brubeck's way of showing that jazz isn't always limited to 4/4. Great albums, and his timeless classic album Time Out is just a landmark album I think most music lovers and musicians should own, if not at least hear once.

And here's one out of left field - Daft Punk's debut album Homework. Great techno music and just an awesome listen straight through.

And along that style is Rob Dougan's Furious Angels - you make recognize his music as it was used in the film series The Matrix. Great blend of techno and trip-hop and classical music.

And back to jazzy stylings, I'd also recommend any of Chicago's first three albums. They're the only band to have ever released 3 consecutive double albums in under 2 years, and they're pretty great albums all around. This is far and away from the soft-rock/adult-contemporary jazz you might know from their later output. It's early 70's jazz and rock with great guitars and horns.

Those are probably most of my non-prog indulgences that I could suggest!

-Marc.
