Recommend to me a really great album
« on: October 03, 2010, 11:34:00 AM »
Lately my playlist has consisted of a few really solid albums: A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park, Dark Side of the Moon, The Beatles discography, and Animosity by Sevendust.  The thing that really appeals to me in each of these is not only that they're all really great albums, but the fact that the songs are so cohesive, so that the best way to listen to them is as one complete album.  ITT we list all the great albums that are better experienced in this way so I can give them at try.

I have that plus Moonloop.

A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

I have that one too.  Love that album to death.

But yeah, see that's exactly what I'm talking about.  Thirteenth Step is so great, but so much more so when you just listen to it from beginning to end.

Woot for this!

Also, for cohesiveness of songs, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats:

Tool - Lateralus.

Listening to that in one go with headphones is INSANE. Also most PT albums.

I don't know how much you like whacky electronic music, but Transylvania Radio by Casey James and the Staypuft Kid is one of my favorite albums of all time. God, i think I've listened to that album over 100 times, easily. And it's free!

Oh yeah, I should mention I do have Wish You Were Here, and I'm having trouble getting into Tool.  I'm guessing 10,000 Days was a bad place for me to start?

I dunno, some say it's their most accessible but I found it way harder to get into than Lateralus, which I loved as soon as I heard the title track. I'd give Lateralus a try in full before giving up on them, although you'll have to wade through the first half of the album to get to the more immediately gratifying stuff.

Picture - Kino

I started the above thread because I've been digging this album again, and I always have, it's just re-entered my rotation lately (along with Frost*, which I would recommend too if you don't have them already).

Kino definitely put out a very consistent album, and it's very song-oriented but with the great talents of prog musicians behind them. Read the thread I made for more info on who they are. There's even a link to a free sample medley on their website (which still works, I tried it out the other night).

And I would agree, 10,000 Days probably wasn't the best album to start with. Lateralus would've been a better choice, IMO.

Kansas - Leftoverture
Kansas - Point of Know Return

Not a bad song on either one, and they're not terribly long listens either. Awesome classic/progressive rock.

Thrice - The Alchemy Index (Volumes I to IV).

4 EPs in two albums - fire, water, air and earth. Each EP reflects it's namesake in style of music. I only got it yesterday but it's getting better with each listen and is just so enjoyable - the four contrasting styles means there is a section that fits different moods I'm feeling and the type of music I want at the time.

Frank Zappa- Joe's Garage.

Cannot be understood or truly appreciated by listening in pieces.

-Marc.

I'd actually recommend one of the first two albums as a starter, probably Aenima. I had trouble getting into Lateralus and I was already a big fan...

I got Animals a couple years ago and I wasn't too crazy about it, but I've been thinking recently I'd give it another spin.

Oh FYI everyone, although all prog contributions are welcome, what I'm looking for is neither restricted to nor exclusive of prog bands. :tup
