SBC = Freddie Mercury
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:45:54 AM »
Wasn't really sure if this shouldn't go in 'General Discussion'.  But, since it was Queen-related, I figured I'd go with the 'General Music Discussion'.  I'm not really sure what to think of this...

According to MTV.com, comic and filmmaker Sacha Baron Cohen will play legendary QUEEN frontman Freddie Mercury in an upcoming movie.

Cohen will portray the British singer in a film focusing on QUEEN's developing years up until the band's historic 1985 Live Aid set.

GK Films ("The Tourist"), Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions and Queen Films are reportedly helming the project.

Looking forward to this. More and more lately I'm realizing Queen basically represent everything that I like about music.

Should work well.  Borat did come 7th in the Freddie look alike competition.

I'd like to see if Sacha Baron Cohen can play a serious role.

I think he's a good enough actor and he has the right look.

But can he (a) sing? and (b) overcome the fact that he's Ali G/Borat/Bruno?

I think everything SBC has done is amazingly funny personally. I mean, if you are sick of something because of it's hype, that's fine. But just go back and watch some old Ali G episodes and tell me that stuff isn't good.

As for this? I said this back when Borat and Sweeney Todd came out. Bring it on. He's perfect for it. I'm glad it's actually happening now. This is similar to when Michael Chikilis got picked to play The Thing in Fantastic Four. It's just an obvious choice.

I'm curious if he can.  I don't like him much either.

Oooh, interesting but good choice.

So, is SBC going to wear dentures for early Freddie?

Honestly, I've never thought SBC's style of humor was funny.  Extreme, often juvenile, often downright disrespectful.  I can see why others find it funny, but as you all know, I'm a very conservative guy and... oh fuck it.  I just don't like the guy.

But I can't deny his talent, and hopefully he does justice to the role.  I'm a huge Queen fan, and would love to see a biopic on Freddy if it's done right.

@Reap: I know he can definitely overcome it. He's a terrific actor that just completely changes his whole persona when he gets into character. The only potential issue will be whether audience members can watch the film without thinking of him as one of those characters.

Personally I can't think of anyone more suited to play the role. He looks the part, is an excellent actor, and will be able to pull off the flamboyant personality. Plus he can definitely sing, as evidenced in Sweeney Todd.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

Judging by some of his interviews, I think his intelligence is reflective of his understanding of the craft. I think he could pull off a dramatic role very well.

I'm not sure whether the ability to sing is a requirement for the movie really.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
