The proper answer to your question is to start with Waking the Fallen, but keep in mind that the style of that album is quite different from the rest of their stuff. But it's still the best place to start because it contains their best songwriting.

If you're just going to start with one album I'd reccomend City Of Evil. It's their best in my opinion, and it'll make it easy to transition back into Waking The Fallen and into their later stuff.

If you mean specific songs, Afterlife and Bat Country are a good start. They are singles but they're both good songs, Afterlife is by far the best from self-titled imo.

I'll just throw my opinion in here even though I don't like Avenged Sevenfold much... Start with Waking the Fallen because its a fantastic album, and their best by far. The reason why I say that is because I can't stand their newer albums at all.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Waking the Fallen or City of Evil, but keep in mind that those 2 albums are VERY different from each other.

I have tried, but I failed in liking this band at all. Just not into this autotuned pop-metal stuff. Devin Townsend does it better on Addicted!

If you don't like screaming, get City of Evil.

If you do like screaming, get Waking The Fallen.

If you like both, get Waking The Fallen.

Bat Country and the lead playing in The Beast and the Harlot are what turned me off of this band, besides the shitty vocals.

I'd say Nightmare. City of Evil is good, too, but a bit weaker in the vocal department. I haven't heard anything other than those too.

I see some comments about 'shitty vocals', OK i'm not that familiar with their older albums, so things might have changed for the better, but i do think M.Shadows is one of the better singers in the metal-genre, one of my favorites under that category for sure.

His clean voice on Waking the Fallen sounded much better than it does now. It has much more power and presence.

I agree entirely. His voice had quite a whiny quality to it on the earlier albums but on the last couple he sounds really and is incredibly versatile. His performance on Tonight the World Dies in particular is just fantastic, almost has a Jorn Lande quality to it.

No, almost all of their vocal arrangements have gotten the autotune treatment. It's not unbearable (they're not using it in the Cher or T-Pain way), but with metal music, it just makes it sound to polished and perfect. Adding to that, the production sounds ugly, and I just can't enjoy it. Like the metal genre's equivalent to MacDonalds.

I don't have City of Evil, how does that fit into the sound? That was their first on a major label... so was that the reason for the sound change?

It just sounds like hard rock really. No screaming on it at all.

Well, they had been planning on changing their sound for a while (I think) but I'm pretty sure M. Shadow's messing up his vocal chords helped the change, if you know what I mean.

Edit:

Taken from a interview I found on Wikipedia:

"When we started working on this record, we said, 'You know what? None of our favorite bands are super extreme, they just write really good melodic songs that are still heavy,"

Apparently, that's why they decided to change their sound

If they hadn't changed their sound, I'd literally have zero interest in them, so I'm very glad they did.

Regarding the autotune, the only excessive use is on the self-titled (especially in Lost, but it's noticable in some other songs as well). I still don't feel it detracts from the quality of the album though, and it isn't even noticable on any of their other albums.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
