Your Top 5 Songs of All Time
« on: September 05, 2010, 04:27:53 PM »
I didn't see any sort of thread like this and I thought it would be interesting to see people's favorite songs.  I'll have to get back to this thread later and post mine.

This is way too hard.
I'll post 5, but looking back at them in a week or two, things probably have changed. :P

1. Porcupine Tree - Dark Matter
2. Agalloch - Falling Snow
3. Anathema - Universal
4. Radiohead - Pyramid Song
5. Dredg - Sang Real

But i should also mention that Ulver would be on the list, however i'm not quite sure what song i love the most. (they have so many awesome songs) :heart

Tough... well, here's five I could come up with, in no particular order...
Rush - "La Villa Strangiato"
The Flower Kings - "Stardust We Are"
Dream Theater - "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence"
Transatlantic - "Stranger In Your Soul", "The Whirlwind"

REALLY hard to narrow it down to five... maybe 5 from each of my top 5 or 10 bands, but never 5, period.

Only the first two are set in stone.  After that, who the hell knows?

1. Bruce Springsteen-Thunder Road

3. Marillion-Neverland
4. Porcupine Tree-Too many songs to consider for first place
5. Rush-Limelight?  Natural Science?  Freewill?

1. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven (How original. Well, I can't do anything about it. I'm glad the whole world realised the greatness of this.)
2. Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere but Not Here
3. Alter Bridge - Blackbird (AB are great, but this is their best song by far. Seeing them live in a few months!)
4. Jeff Buckley - Grace
5. Damien Rice - I Remember (the live version from his BBC gig).

I could never choose my top 5 favorites, but my top 5 played according to last.fm:

1. Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
2. CunninLynguists - Nothing To Give
3. Tom Waits - Alice
4. 65daysofstatic - Radio Protector
5. Bjork - Play Dead

Pain of Salvation's Used would be on my list, and Tom Wait's Alice as well. A Jeff Buckley song perhaps, but not Last Goodbye... maybe Lover, You Should've Come Over.

Nice choice for Tom Waits. The only albums I know by heart are 'Alice' and 'Blood Money'. I really like the song 'Poor Edward' as well.

Wow this is a tough one.....

1. ACOS - Hands down the best piece of music I have ever experienced

2. Catch the Rainbow - Off of the "Live on Stage" LP

3. Achilles Last Stand - all you have to do is listen to the multiple guitar tracks to understand the studio Master that is James Patrick Page... "And the mighty arms of Atlas.. hold the heavans from the earth!!"

4. Idioglossia - just an incredible arrangement and performance... I never get tired of it.

5. Far Beyond The Sun - You like blazing guitar?

Rush - "2112"
The Flower Kings - "Garden of Dreams" (although this feels like cheating :p)
Radiohead - "How to Disappear Completely"
Pink Floyd - "Time"
Porcupine Tree - "Lightbulb Sun"

And if it were considered a single song, the medley from Side 2 of the Beatles' Abbey Road would definitely be up there. :coolio

I'm using the one song per band rule to make this easy. No ranking either just 5 songs I like more than any others.

Avenged Sevenfold - Save Me
Between The Buried & Me - Swim To The Moon
Coheed & Cambria - The Crowing
Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (I flipped a coin on this one against Lines In The Sand)
Guns N Roses - Coma

1.Björk - Anchor Song
Because it sounds so isolated and lonely.

2. Modest Mouse - Bukowski
Because it is a song with a lot of thought going on, the sort of thoughts that one can only have while downtrodden and alone.

3. Porcupine Tree - Heartattack in a Layby
It truly can't be described. You have to take it as you will on your own.

4. My Morning Jacket - I Will Sing You Songs
Because it is beautiful and...well...sad.

5. Chroma Key - Sad, Sad Movie
Because the music is simple but amazing, accompanied by lyrics of regret and sadness.

Dream Theater - Learning To Live
Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
Beatles - Penny Lane
Pink Floyd - Time
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

1. Tool - Lateralus
2. Metallica - Master of Puppets
3. Incubus - Drive
4. Between the Buried and Me - White Walls
5. Alter Bridge - Blackbird

HM: Tiesto - Adagio For Strings
Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth

Obviously not the best songs of all time, but definitely my favorites.

EDIT: However, I do think Lateralus is the greatest song of all time.

If I had an Incubus song in my top 20 it would probably be Aqueous Transmission. I'll have to give Drive another listen now based on your joint recommendation.

HA that one didn't get intercepted. Suck it.

Oh wow dude you gotta give Make Yourself a listen. It's Incubus' perfect balance of the aggression of Science and the laid back atmosphere of Morning View.

Fair enough, although I would place SIYS and DWTD above ITPOE and TCOT, tied with 8VM for top spot... Glad to see someone loves those two songs as much as I do, though!
