Joe Satriani is back.
« on: September 04, 2010, 08:39:39 AM »
He never really left ofcourse, but I thought his latest few albums were a bit boring at times. I also didn't like the production of his latest.

Well, he posted a new track on his Soundcloud. It grooves like mad, and the production is insane. Awesome guitar tones are everywhere.

Check it out: https://soundcloud.com/joesatriani/light-years-away

Wow...that was really good.  I would've expected Satch to be pretty stale now-a-days, but that was fantastic.

Cool track.

As of late I agree with what's been said, but Andalusia is one of his best songs, no question.

As for this song, it was pretty dull.

Since Is There Love in Space? which IMO was a great album, I haven't liked anything from Joe to be honest.  Black Swans was actually pretty decent but his output has been average for a long time now.  I didn't even listen to the last one.

I was a superfan back in the day but haven't bought anything since Crystal Planet  :o

That is my fav Satch record.  Songs like the title track, Up in the Sky, Ceremony, Lights of Heaven, Secret Prayer and Time are easily some of the best instrumental guitar songs ever IMO.

Only Surfing With the Alien is better, but seeing as that's a lot shorter they're pretty evenly matched.
All the songs wolfking mentioned are indeed awesome and I feel like highlighting With Jupiter In Mind as well. That's such a wicked tune with a vibe unlike anything he's done. That extended play-out is particularly satisfying.

Engines of Creation was where he started waning IMO. I haven't kept up with his releases post-Super Colossal at all.

Our debut album "Eläimys" is a trip I can whole-heartedly recommend to anyone into Pain of Salvation, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Magma etc.

Yeah, Jupiter is a good one mate, Train of Angels is very nice too.  Engines definitely is the beginning of the quality dropping.  That however is an original and pretty good release too though.  Some crackers on that one too.

I still think he continues to put out unbelievably consistent high quality instrumental guitar music in comparison to anyone else on the planet. I wasn’t crazy about the last one but I absolutely loved Shockwave Supernova. He’s put out plenty of great stuff since Engines Of Creation (which I didn’t like very much either) and I’m very much looking forward to whatever he does next.

I agree that Crystal Planet is an all time classic though.

Crystal Planet is stellar, and I would add Surfing With The Alien and The Extremist as my favorites. Since Engines, which wasn't really my thing, that drum 'n' bass thing doesn't match well with rock guitar imo, there were always great songs on his records, but also a lot of mediocre ones. Without looking at my CDs I don't know which was the last one I bought, they kinda blur ihto each other.

Joe went a bit samey after Crystal Planet but he’s always quality. The last one was a great album.

I’m currently in Instrumental mode at the moment. The memory stick in the car is all Instrumental.

Missing everything after Black Swans which might coincide  with when the last Independent CD Store within 30 miles went out of business.

I never cared for Satriani, and when I saw him live at the last G3 tour in 2018, his tone made my ears hurt (not even exaggerating, his treble must have been all the way up). I do enjoy some of his music though and can appreciate his talent.

Was on a Satriani kick lately. His best records are still the ones I mentioned above. But I got What Happens Next, Unstoppable Momentum and Shockwave Supernova and really enjoyed them. Especially Shockwave Supernova was surprisingly good.

Shockwave Supernova is my favourite of his albums in recent years, it’s up there with some of his best for me.  Not quite at the all time classic level but really good.

I very much echo this sentiment. Shockwave Supernova was a fantastic surprise, definitely one of the best of his late career. Love the open sounding production. ‘Goodbye Supernova’ just sounds divine, that groove. It remains a mystery to me why Satch delivers great sounding records (Shockwave, Super Colossal) interspersed with quite subpar sounding records (his last few and Unstoppable Momentum).

I enjoy most of his albums to be honest up until the last two.  I’m not keen on What Happens Next or Shapeshifting.  Before that though I always enjoyed his records to varying degrees apart from two that are very different sounding, those being the bluesy self-titled one and the techno Engines Of Creation.
