Songs You'd Want Played At Your Funeral
« on: September 02, 2010, 12:27:30 PM »
Yes....this is macabre as hell, but what songs would you like to have played at your funeral, or wake? I'm not talking about the funeral dirge here either. Before you answer, think about the people in attendance. Be realistic- don't answer "Something by Cannibal Corpse", unless you think your family rolls like that.

For me:

Adagio for Strings
Swing Low Sweet Chariot
Sonata #14, Opus #27 "Moonlight"
Ave Maria
Further on Down the Road
and finally, Amazing Grace with bagpipes
AND
Always Look On the Bright Side of Life

You don't HAVE a soul.You ARE a soul.You HAVE a body.

Always Look On the Bright Side of Life
:lol That would be so awkward!

Mine would probably be some sad stuff like Stop Swimming, Lazarus or Collapse. Yeah, those kind of Porcupine Tree songs.

EDIT: On second thought, it would only make people more sad so I'm not sure... :-\

Maybe Lenny, but it's a bit cheesy. Dogs by Damien Rice perhaps.

The Great Gig in the Sky-Pink Floyd

And I think I might have to steal that "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" idea from you when the time comes Tempus.

Would probably start with a soft-ballad type of song like "Lullaby" by Blackfield, then followed by "Wreath" by Opeth.

I've never thought about that before.

As people are coming in, play some southern rock classics like "Freebird" and "Midnight Rider".

Then to start the ceremony play the Arkansas Razorbacks fight song.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEY5xJ32fB8

Then the preacher gives a short little sermon followed by "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFarrin

Testimonials

Then a small local jazz band can play "When the Saints Go Marching In" in New Orleans funeral style

The preacher says a few more words and then play "Jesus Freak" as people leave.

A few years ago, I actually burned my mom a CD of mellow songs I wanted played in the background when people come to view my body at the funeral home.  I know, kinda depressing thing to do.  It was all Kevin Moore songs.  You can go at any moment, and I wanted the comfort of KM tunes filling the room on my dying day.  :blush

1) "Eve" by Dream Theater
2) "Chroma Key" by Chroma Key
3) "Colorblind" by Chroma Key
4) "Subway" by Chroma Key
5) "Standby (Looks Like Rain)" by OSI
6) "Sad Sad Movie" by Chroma Key
7) "White Robe" by Chroma Key
8) "Our Town" by OSI
9) "Space-Dye Vest" by Dream Theater
10) Bonus track: "Song for Tori" by Kevin Moore

and finally, Amazing Grace with bagpipes

I still tear up like a baby when Scotty plays that as Spock coasts down the torpedo tube.

I don't have any songs that are that meaningful to me, and all the funerals I've been to have been short and sweet, which is how I would like it: Get in, and get out; don't spend hours of time mourning for me. I've always liked the theme song to Shawshank Redemption though, what plays when Andy tells Red about Zihuatenejo in the yard.

'Faith No More - Surprise! You're Dead!', being able to joke about it makes death not nearly as depressing as it already is.

One a more serious note, I don't think I'd want people to hear something I chose for them to hear, if they want to link a song to my passing then they can just do it themselves.

Jeff Buckley. Any song, although Hallelujah is a bit cliché. Also Anathema - One Last Goodbye.

Oh, and something from ( ).

Maybe I need to think about this instead of making 1 post and editing stuff in for the third time...

My wife wants me to play that disco song "aaaaAAAH - FREAK OUT!" at hers.  She's swell.

I wouldn't want anything too sad.  Rain Song by Led Zeppelin would be lovely.

Nothing. I want no music, just akward silence as they play a recording of me listing random people there, and then say that those were the people who sexually mollested me as a child.
