New to this thread, also a bump. Been a fan since The Blackening, but my favorite album from them is Bloodstone & Diamonds.

Can’t wait to hear Catharsis, and I got my tickets for the Evening With tour that’s about to start. 🤘
According to Flynn, this won’t be their heaviest album, but the most melodic. Let’s see what it can do.

What I've heard so far of the new album really hasn't filled me with much confidence at all.

The band actually posted the review of the new album by Decibel magazine on their website. It slams it as Nu-metal garbage. Robb has said that he considers this the successor to The Burning Red, which I have never heard due to how much it has been slammed. The stuff I have heard hasn't clicked. Hopefully, when I see them next month they focus on more classic material.

Of course, the magazine takes a drive-by slam at Megadeth by mentioning Super Collider. I actually really enjoyed that album so who knows.

Bloodstone & Diamonds, despite being weaker than I had hoped, had some pretty sick riffs here and there. I'm not sure if that 2016 single "Is There Anybody Out There?" is gonna be on the new album, but it gave me such a bittersweet feeling. Lyrics are awful, and the rap/metal-ish verses are pretty cringeworthy, but at the same time there are a few good hooks in the chorus and some cool riffs, and the breakdown is also pretty cool. The whistling seems like a poor attempt to re-create some of the "Darkness Within" magic but fails.

The latest single is good, definitely better than the former. I didn't expect to enjoy this less agressive side of MH, but truth be told my favourite parts of the song are still the heavy ones. Definitely gonna check out the album but keeping my expectations low to hopefully be pleasantly surprised like I was with that last single.

I wasn't impressed with 'Beyond The Pale' but I really enjoyed the title track.

Surprised at the lack of love for Bloodstone. I consider it superior to The Blackening (just beats it), more mature songwriting and better melodies and production. Don't get me wrong though, I love The Blackening.

Although this doesn't fill me with much confidence I'll make up my own mind. I mean, I'm hardly a big fan of TBR (it's probably my least favourite of theirs) but then again I also love Supercharger, which often gets slammed. Ever since Machine Head released The Blackening (which is my fave of theirs and basically flawless imo) I've been hoping for them to release something even better. I know this is a pretty much impossible task and I came to terms with this years ago. That being said I have no expectations from these guys and if they release a good album with some great songs, I'm happy.

B&D was a really nice surprise for me. As I said, I had no real expectations and I really enjoyed it (Game Over was particularly  :metal :metal :metal). This new one will hopefully do the same. I haven't been particularly looking forward to it, if it's great then amazing, if not then I know there will be plenty of awesome stuff coming this year. Machine Head have given me so much incredible heavy music over the years that I can forgive them the odd dud.

That's quite cool that the band posted a negative review.

It was pretty damn good IMO, but TB is just on another level to everything.

Yeah, their peak, for me, was Ashes and Blackening. I don't see them ever topping those records.

As for the negative review, Robb has been doing his best to temper fan expectations for a few months now and I think this is just part of that. It's like he knows there will be a backlash and is just getting in front of it. I don't fault an artist for doing what they want even if I don't like it. My expectations dropped once he started his FYI crusade. I'll still pick up the album, but I am very cautious.

New song 'Bastards': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28Ig3RGdVMY

They're making it really really hard to look forward to the album with this one. Even disregarding the cringy lyrics like 'the pussy generation' it's just a really weird song for Machine Head, sounds like a Stone Sour ballad combined with some semi-heavy B&D style heaviness near the end.

Sooo I listened to Catharsis a couple times all the way through, and I gotta say it’s a disappointment. I wouldn’t say it’s as bad as all the critic reviews that I’ve read, but it’s nowhere near the amazing run of Ashes/Blackening/Locust/Bloodstone. Triple Beam is a complete joke that should never have made the album. The rest is kinda blah.

That being said, Heavy Lies The Crown......wow!!!  :metal :hefdaddy That song is one of the best MH songs ever written. Definitely wanna hear that one live!

Only one listen so far and there is some cool stuff on it, but it will take a bit for it to sink in. It’s definitely not as bad as some of the reviews make it sound, but I don’t think it’s up to par with the last couple and definitely not as good as The Blackening.

The Blackening is one of my favorite metal albums of all time and I don’t think they could ever top that, but they still have been putting out solid albums IMO. Time will tell though how this one holds up for me.

Catharsis sucks, people. At least it sucked for me, sorry. I think they were really onto something with their Blackening->Locust->B&D album run but this album is to Machine Head what Supercollider is to Megadeth. I guess they tried to do something along the lines of 'The More Things Change...' but with lazy riffs and with Robb being reaally deep up in his own ass with his lyrics, and it ended up being kind of a slightly better version of 'Supercharger' instead.

Those songs do come alive live though. I haven't heard the album, but of the ones they played live they were great.

I'm one listen through and it isn't as bad as the reviews, but it also isn't exactly great. There's one really good song, some okay/decent ones and a few that are just yikes.

Still looking forward to seeing them next week. The setlists look great so there shouldn't be an disappointment there.

I believe you! Machine Head are a brutal live band, that's for sure. They made From this Day sound amazing live, I can bet they easily can do the same for these songs.

This album has really grown on me.  There are a few songs that I’m not too crazy about, but overall I think it’s a real solid album and don’t get the hate for it.  I don’t go to many concerts these days, but really wish I would have seen them last week when they played in NYC.

Robb is sick and ended last night's show halfway through and already canceled tonight's. He's seeing a specialist today to determine how to proceed and if they need to cancel more dates.

I see them (maybe) next Friday so this is something I will be monitoring.

They still haven't played a show since last week and they have canceled tonight already. Honestly, I'm hoping for a cancellation of the Chicago show. With only 9 shows left on the tour, they should just pull the plug now. I'm not interested in being at the show where Robb gives it a go. With the kind of travel and effort that I have to go through to get to a show, I don't want them at less than 100% of their best.

I'll catch them the next time around when he's healthy.

It seems like Machine Head has a history of having to cancel a lot of shows. I know health is beyond your control, especially in this case when it’s affecting the singer’s throat, but it just seems like more times than not when they tour there’s at least some cancelled shows.  Still upset that I missed the NY show. Just a crazy time at work and I was fighting a cold too so it was probably for the best.

Yeah, I’m also supposed to be at the Chicago show tomorrow. As much as I’m dying the see them again, I wouldn’t wanna see Robb give less than 100% and be miserable. This whole situation sucks.

Yup, Chicago is on.

Somber texts between my buddies and I as we try to coordinate travel to the show. Kinda funny to be so disappointed to be going to a show. Well, here's to hoping that things work out.

Machine Head is done. Phil and Dave both quit. Robb says the remaining tour dates will serve as a farewell tour for the band.

Pretty sad. Guess it's good I got to see them when I did.

To me it sounds like they might collaborate in the future, but not under the name Machine Head.
