Reggae Appreciation/Discussion Thread
« on: August 22, 2010, 03:36:49 PM »
In this thread we discuss and appreciate Reggae.
Even tough this probably isn't the most logical place to be discussing about Reggae I taught I'd give it a try.

After going to a Burning Spear concert two days ago and seeing Alpha Blondy live I realized this type of music is great. It's just perfect for chilling out.

I'm not too familiar with the genre, but I like what I've heard and I'm open to anything and everything. Recommendations?

I really like Bob Marley, but haven't checked out the genre at all beyond him, I don't think.

Except for NZ reggae / dub reggae, of which I listen to a sprinkling - Katchafire, The Black Seeds, Fat Freddy's Drop, Salmonella Dub.

Check out all of Bob's sons. Damien, Julian, Ziggy, Stephen, and Kymani.

Buju Banton is good too.

All I have is Bob Marley's Exodus which is fantastic. I also have Damien Marley's & Nas' 2010 collaboration (reggae/hip-hop) which I also really like. I must check out more of this genre.
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

I've been listening to Scientist - Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires [1981] the past month. It is seriously fantastic! It's considered dub, which is just like reggae but with track looping and added effects, which makes some really interesting music.

Any of you who played GTAIII, this album was featured on the K-Jah radio station.

Here is the first track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqeXfjnUdmI very cool bassline

There's absolutely no need for this. If you can't add anything to the thread then just don't post in it.

It definitely doesn't. Listen to:
Peter Tosh - Bush Doctor
Bob Marley - Is This Love
UB40 - Red Red Wine

Three reggae songs that definitely don't sound exactly the same.

Not to mention all the reggae influenced music of The Police.
I don’t know what to put here anymore

Yeah, and so does metal.

Actually, I think because all reggae is built around such a simple musical structure and idea and can sound quite similar, it's possibly harder to write really good reggae songs and stand out as a songwriter than in most genres. You have to be able to put a new spin on music that works within an extremely restrictive framework and thus you really can't spin very far.

Check The Upsetters - Super Ape [1976], the the best Dub album along Rids The World.

I listen to a lot of the roots stuff. Love the bands that create that mystic atmosphere. Bands like Mighty Diamond, Congo, Burning Spear, Culture, Black Uhuru and course Marley. Two of the most famous non-Marley roots reggae albums are Heart of The Congos by Congo, and Two Sevens Clash by Culture. Real haunting and mellow stuff. Check Black Uhuru if you want a harder edge.

Super bump to say I'm seeing The Skints tomorrow.

They are a London based reggae band. They mix in some ska and kinda hip hop with a punk rock vibe as well. I can't recommend them enough. Each album has become a bit more reggae each time. They released their third album last year and it's more full on reggae.

If you want to try a young modern bands take on reggae then check them out!

Couple of examples of their style:
