Good Starting Point for Porcupine Tree?
« on: August 21, 2010, 12:59:13 AM »
What is the best album to start with Porcupine Tree?  Also what's the most accessible song to get into them?

I would suggest either Lightbulb Sun or In Absentia.

As for accessible...that depends on what you like! They have ballads, heavy rockers, atmospheric trips, and more... all of which have been done in an accessible-song format in some form or another across their discography, but those two albums listed above have a pretty good cross-section of their sound that connects their earlier works and their latter works.

I'd say In Absentia. It captures all the aspects of their style.

As for the most accessible song... they have several of those. Blackest Eyes, Trains and Open Car are accessible. And good.

My entry into them was Lazarus (a very accessible song), and then watching the Arriving Somewhere DVD.

In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun and/or Deadwing would be a good starting point. Take your pick.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

I started with In Absentia and I think it's a good starting point as well. Deadwing isn't bad for starters, either.

In Absentia first, then go back one to Lightbulb Sun, skip over to Deadwing, then go back three to Stupid Dream.

It all comes down to what type of music you enjoy the most.
Up the Downstair - Lightbulb Sun is the best time-period by the band, then the albums & the music has become slightly worse, still being fantastic though. :P

I'd definitely say In Absentia, I originally got the Stars Die compilation thing but I couldn't get into it at all, then a year later I tried In Absentia and now I love them.

"Blackest Eyes" and "Trains" are probably their two most instantly accessible songs, but I found the rest of In Absentia a difficult hill to climb at first.  It took me getting into some of their other albums for me to really get into that as a whole.  To me, Stupid Dream is the place to start, without question.

I got into the band through deadwing. I think In Absentia, Deadwing, and Fear of a Black Planet  would be pretty solid albums for new listeners.

Deadwing, Stupid Dream or Fear Of a Blank Planet, don't go with LS if you don't like Stupid Dream at least.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

I'm gonna say Fear of a Blank Planet actually. Kev's right about IA; while it has a fair amount of 'accessible' songs, the real meat of the album isn't like that. FOABP has 6 really solid songs which feature a decent range of music, and all are pretty easy to get into.

I would say this as well. I'd start with Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun, or FOABP before In Absentia.
