Yeah, 'cause it's automatically bad if someone's favourite artist isn't near the top of every one.

What an awful list.  Why in the world would you have so many songs by the same artists?

I thought this thread was the "soul" of metal.  Not just classic metal songs with heavy riffs...

I was kidding man, I couldn't care less whether or not DT (or any other band for that matter) made the list, I was just pointing out that they just barely made the cut.

Besides most of those bands being shit, the fact that some of there's maybe 30 different bands on the entire thing, and some bands are repeated 5,6, even 10 times is pretty bad considering how many great metal bands there are out there.

Yeah, they come in at #13 for greatest metal band, #1 for greatest prog metal, #2 for greatest prog metal album, and Petrucci's the greatest guitarist of the '90s (for all rock).

Anyways, I posted the list because most of the songs thrown out there fell in the top 10.  Imo, it's Hallowed Be Thy Name, with close seconds from Master of Puppets, War Pigs/Black Sabbath, and Beyond the Realms of Death.

Honestly, I thought that list wasn't bad.  Bands like Kiss oviously don't belong there, as they're clearly not metal, then or now, but otherwise I think they did a pretty good job of making an objective list.

I'm going to go for a slightly different angle. I'm going with Love? by Strapping Young Lad. It's heavy, got awesome riffs, great double kick work and an epically singable chorus. On top of that I have every reason to believe that the lyrics are about what metal is about. You know that feeling you get when Maiden are just about to go on stage - the intro tape is finishing and the pyro is just about to go off and the room has gone apeshit? Or when 50,000 metal fans are all singing along to a chorus about how we're going stand up for the metal we love and don't care about what the consequence is? Or the fact that it feels like every single one of those people has been a lifelong friend. That's love, baby whether you're too "metal" to admit it or not. Metal = Love. Strapping Young Lad are arguably the heaviest band the world has seen so far. Therefore Love? by SYL is the ultimate metal song.

Plus, the video is based on Evil Dead 2 :D

Not sure if I'd go with Love? specifically, but I was definitely thinking Strapping would be a great pick.

Righ now I'm saying Idioglossia.  It can be aggressive as hell, and really complicated, as well as kind of mellow and brooding, but it's really about the emotions of the song.

Idioglossia is heavy, but it's not metal.

And I say that with Idioglossia as my favorite song by any band ever.

How is it not?  I mean, the song has all the elements to be considered a metal song...

It has no breakdown, so it can't be metal.

No it doesn't. Heavy sections doesn't make a song metal. I wouldn't call anything on TPE or RL as metal. Maybe some stuff on OHBTCL and Scarsick, but only maybe. They're not a metal band, despite how heavy they are. Led Zeppelin aren't a metal band either, but they sometimes have heavy elements and intricate parts.

This too. Not enough double bass. Not downtuned enough, anything higher than the key of I WILL EAT YOUR FACE! is not metal.

So you were only joking earlier?  It didn't sound like it....

And there's lots of double bass, by the way...

Gor-Gor.  :metal

This is a correct choice.

He was partly joking with that one but he is a Gwar fan. Once he goes into Gwar mode he starts reciting their lyrics to me. Something about babies and crack, I dunno...

I wasn't joking though. That song is metal to the bone.

That seems to be nothing but those bands' best known songs

Because there are so many Maiden songs better than Hallowed be thy Name

Iced Earth - Stand Alone.

Kinda cheesy, but has some awesome rockin moments, double bass, good shredding. Seems to have a good metal feel.

Far Beyond Metal. Seriously. I'm not kidding. It IS metal.
