the one song that defines the very soul of Metal
« on: August 20, 2010, 07:21:08 AM »
I was thinking about this last night in a drunken stupor.  What one song do you think fully expresses everything that METAL means and stands for.

For me, it can't be anything but Fade to Black.

Honestly, "Master of Puppets" fits the bill for me.  Metallica may not be my favorite band, but that song is definitely the purest kind of metal.

This.

But really, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Master of Puppets and War Pigs are good answers.

Metal is defined as:

- Dark (musically and especially lyrically)
- Dissonant/Minor keys
- Heavy use of distortion
- Reliance on "bass" riffs

So take your pick of the hundreds of songs that fit that bill (or just your favorite metal song).

More unofficial definitions;

- Palm-mute abuse
- Use of double-bass drumming
- More technical than rock

Mine aren't unofficial, dude. Those are the base characteristics of metal.

There's only double bass drumming in stuff like death metal, deathcore, and stuff like that.

And metal doesn't have to be more technical than rock at all...

And metal doesn't have to be more technical than rock at all...

Well I'm talking generally about metal. By rock, people usually refer to bands like Beatles, Floyd, U2, etc. And by METAL people usually think of bands like the Big Four, Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc. Now compare those bands and see which ones are more technical. They don't HAVE to be more technical, like Agalloch (post-metal judging from The Mantle), but they are just more technical because of their nature to be the fastest and the loudest kind of music.

Double bass drumming doesn't have to be all-out 32nd notes blast, it could mean just incorporating the technique in some parts of the songs. Like in One.

Lotta good songs in this thread. The first one that comes to mind is Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" though.
