System of a Down - This opinion really only comes off as "offbeat" or "controversial" to any of those SoaD fans who think the band sold out or some shit with the release of Mezmerize and Hypnotize. But, Mezmerize is and will always be the best album the band has produced. It's where the band fullly refined their musical style and their writing style. The album feels as if they truly got their shit together and constructed something much more than a collection of hardcore influenced craziness.

Fact.  Mezmerize is fucking amazing, easily their best album.  I love Hypnotize as well, though it's not nearly as good.

EDIT: Didn't realize this thread was four pages long...now I feel like a douche for bringing back first page stuff...oh well.

Toxicity just barely beats out Mezmerize for the title of my favorite SOAD album.

Barely.

Death - Their last 3-4 albums are not Death metal.
How does this...wat?

They are a technical death metal band. What about The Sound of Perseverance wasn't tech death?

Well, the thread did ask for offbeat opinions.. ;D

I guess when I'm listening to The Sound of Perseverance or Symbolic, the music doesn't strike me as being very Death-metal-like.  It's clean and melodic, not brutal or harsh at all.   And Chuck's voice barely qualifies as a Death growl anymore, more like a low rasp.

After listening to St. Anger again, I think The Unnamed feeling is one of Metallica's best songs.

Porcupine Tree are studio bands.

Wat. I've seen them twice and it was stunning both times.

'Scenes From a Memory' is possibly DT's most exciting album, on an instrumental level. I heard the whole piece was written instrumentally before they even thought of vocals. Well, that can be heard. Most of the vocal melodies and word-timings are incredibly awkward, save for the obvious melodic epics like The Spirit Carries On, Through Her Eyes and Finally Free.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Gentle Giant - For being one of the most complex and inaccessible prog bands of the 70s, they're music is funky as hell and great to dance to.

I agree. And glad to find another Gentle Giant fan on these forums.    :D

There are a few others here, I believe Splent and Orbert are into GG.

Scarsick is a great album. Road Salt is too, though to a lesser extent.

Definitely does not compute. I agree that they deviated a little bit from the stuff like Leprosy (will forever be the best), but it's still undeniably technical death metal.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I think what Ludwig means is it's not death metal in the traditional sense. It doesn't sound a thing like Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, etc., which is more or less what the first two albums were most alike in style. I don't think he's denying that it's tech death. He's saying they don't possess the sound that most people think of when they hear the term "death metal." Because those albums are so much more than that.

That's how I interpreted his post, at least.

If this is indeed the case, then I agree.

Pantera - I think that Floods should have been the last song they released (at least the last song on Trendkill).
In high school my buddies and I built a Van Der Graaf generator.  You know, to get girls.
