The Electric Lady is my favourite album of the last 5 (possibly 10) years. I saw her live a couple of weeks ago, up there with the best gigs I've ever been to. A true musician, entertainer and show-woman.

I totally agree on that. She's basically to me what Beyoncé is for most people.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxls2xX0Clg

:rollin I'm not even supposed to like this kind of stuff but I DO. Sweet jesus I love that stuff.

Completely agreed. Insane stuff and I can't help but love it. BTW, have you heard anything off her 2008 E.P., Metropolis? One of my absolute favorite songs by her is off of that E.P.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_WhE7mBwK8

Yeah, actually this was the very first time I became aware of her music, as the song was performed on North Sea Jazz 2012 and was broadcasted on Dutch television:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbQ1wRCEj10

Still one of her best songs I think! This performance is awesome by the way.

NICE! :hefdaddy In some ways, I prefer this live version over the original studio version! That ending is superb! :tup And yes, this is definitely still one of her absolute best songs. Might even be my favorite, but I'm not sure. Sally Ride off the new album is another favorite of mine. :millahhhh

Here's the setlist from the gig I went to:

Suite IV Electric Overture
Givin' Em What They Love
Dance Apocalyptic
Sincerely, Jane.
Q.U.E.E.N.
Electric Lady
I Want You Back / ABC
Cold War
Tightrope
-----------------------
PrimeTime (unbelievable 10 minute version)
Let's Go Crazy
Come Alive (unbelievable 15 minute version, during which she crawled through the crowd and sat right next to me!)
-----------------------
Many Moons
What an Experience

In some ways I'd like her to be much bigger than she is - she deserves to be. On the other hand, I like her almost underground nature, and the smaller venues that come with it. She could quite easily command arenas over here, perhaps even stadiums.

There was a show I missed sometime last November and I'm still kicking myself over it. Hopefully I'll manage to make it to the next show Janelle does in North Carolina, as I really want to see her live.

'Ghetto Woman' is definitely a favorite at the moment. I love it when she raps over those epic parts, and then that GUITAR SOLO.  :metal :metal :metal

Listening to it right now and I completely agree. If memory serves me right, didn't Janelle say she wrote that song for her mother? I can't remember for sure though.

for those who didn't see, she had to cancel her tour with Kimbra in Australia last week due to some medical issues. It's too bad for the fans down there, especially to see the both of them in 1 show, but health obviously comes 1st.

Yeah it is about her mother, she was a janitor. Janelle's birthday is December 1st, which is referenced as her mother's 'due date' in the rap.

Cool, didn't know she had a thread here :P . I discovered The ArchAndroid some months ago, and I've been digesting it. And with each listening, I'm digging it more and more. It's amazing how old-school yet totally fresh this album sounds.

Hadn't heard of her until reading an insanely well written review of Closure In Moscow's Pink Lemonade about a half year back, in which the reviewer mentioned other concept albums including Janelle's trilogy (or whatever she's for going on), and now me and my two year old's can be counted as fans.
Her Sesame Street performance is pretty killer.

not sure if it's just a trilogy, but all 3 of her official releases have been part of a story or concept.

There's at least one more album yet to be made in Janelle's Metropolis series, if my memory is serving me right.

I only got halfway through the first song, but that was just freakin AWFUL.

No seriously, this breaks my heart.  That girl is so talented, and she had me believing that she was going to bring something honest and innovative back to R&B.   She was doing things that could have been the next step forward....but this crap is just bloody terrible.  AUTOTUNE?   JANELLE???   She is way too talented to need that crap.   This was just an attempt to sound like everything else that’s out there right now.

I’m upset.  I’ll be in my trailer.

"Make Me Feel" is actually a Prince tune, or rather a tune he gave to Janelle, and it sounds incredibly Prince-like. "Kiss" much?

It's odd how my wife who only likes a percentage of the music from Janelle as I do, is thinking she will enjoy this album more than I will because how *urban*and even feminist/overtly sexual (and gay) it will come across.

I guess I am still at a wait-and -listen to the whole thing before judging. I do like the newest track "I like that" a little more.

album isn't bad. Some interesting guests including of all people, Brian Wilson

"Emotion Picture" (48 mins)

oddly, my wife only likes 2 or 3 songs, whereas I am enjoying this more than I expected after hearing the singles.

Not bad at all, but far from the special stuff she used to make. Pre- Dirty Computer her beats and musical influences seemed to come from outside the generic mainstream hiphop producers, but this 808 beat right here just sounds like everything else.
