I'd go with Destroy Erase Improve or Chaosphere.

I would go with either Catch 33 or Nothing.

It does seem there really isn't much of a consensus what their best album is, which in my opinion is a compliment to the band.

^^ Totally agreed (although I think it's generally accepted that people who think Nothing is their best album are fucking awesome people who have tons of friends and get laid every single night).

Which version of Nothing do you guys recommend - the original or the remaster?  From what I've heard the guitars sound much better on the remaster, but they fiddled with the drum track and the new triggered drums sound awful.

Well, I started from ObZen and absolutely loved it, then got Contradictions Collapse and also finding it pretty interesting, even though totally different. What would you recommend as the next step?

Chaosphere

You might like I as well (it's a 20 minute, 1 song EP).  It's one of my favorite Meshuggah releases, but a lot of people seem to dislike it for some reason.

you really can't go wrong though.

Right, I'll take a look around and check it out. ;)

I've been wondering what the experienced fans think about ObZen btw, as I haven't really seen many opinions.

I think Obzen is a great album.  I haven't listened to the whole thing in awhile though.  Bleed is one of my favorite Meshuggah songs.

Love this band.  They're music is incredibly complex, but not in a shreddy way.

Yeah, I personally prefer the original because of the drums and because of the vocals. The guitars do sound heavy as fuck on the remaster though, and I usually pick this one to play in my car, but when I'm listening with headphones I'll always choose the original.

I really wish they would remaster DEI.

I listened to DEI today in my car (good sound system), and yeah, something about the production is just off.  There's a weird medium to high pitch overtone going on in FBR that was driving me crazy.

Hmmm, I didn't know there was a remaster for it. Does it sound different at all?
FWIW I think the two versions of Nothing are notably different for reasons I mentioned above.

The only response to the repetitive comments is like that's their sound.

Meshuggah just pulls off this awesome cold, hard machine like sound, with eerie holdsworth-esque leads, and in my opinion tolerable growling vocals.

Plus all of them are top tier musicians.

Meshuggah actually should have their own genre of 'Meshuggah Metal'; they sound how they sound and nobody else sounds quite like them

They were the first, though. And probably the only pretty accurate attempt at putting them under a genre would be "technical, unmelodic and heavy as fuck experimental modern thrash metal".

I would just like to mention the awesomeness of the vocal groove in the chorus of The Exquisite Machinery of Torture.  It is win on a plate.

Appreciate please.  :)

Been listening to them a lot today.  Catch 33 just clicked.  I've heard Chaosphere and obZen too, and they had some  great moments, but as of today, Catch 33 is my favorite of the three.

1. Chaosphere
2. Destroy Erase Improve
3. ObZen
4. Catch Thirty-Three
5. Nothing
6. Contradictions Collapse

That's my ranking of the albums although they're all great apart from CC, you may as well just buy all of them!  :metal
I don't have the funds to buy the DVD atm sadly but I'm sure it's immense.

Also the EPs "I" and "The True Human Design" are pretty good. Plus the "Rare Trax" compilation.
