Looking for dark, quirky music with a sense of melody
« on: August 03, 2010, 02:37:31 PM »
Bit of a random request, I know, but after listening to Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album the other day, I fell in love with the song A Little Piece of Heaven, which is incredibly quirky, dark in places, poppy in others, but mostly melodic and quite fun. And I realised that my music collection is almost entirely lacking in anything remotely similar, so I was wondering if anyone here might have any recommendations.

I'm listening to some Diablo Swing Orchestra right now on Spotify, which is really hitting the spot, but I need moar suggestions!

Just looked them up, sounds intriguing! Might have to check their album out.

And genuinely, when I saw you had replied, I thought you were going to be recommending Krotchraut. :lol

Amorphis? Kinda cheesy, but might work. I personally love Silent Waters.

I love Amorphis, although it doesn't really fit the quirky element.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, keep 'em coming. :)

Ooh, a colleague of mine recommended Cardiacs and offered to lend me some of their albums. Nothing on Spotify, so I might have to take him up on that offer!

I've heard Mr Bungle recommendations before, and I love some of FNM's stuff, so think I should probably check them out. Spotify has Disco Volante and the self-titled album... any suggestion on which to check out first?

And I'm listening to Stolen Babies' album 'There Be Squabbles Ahead' right now, very cool stuff, definitely quirky enough! I really love Spotify so much for checking out new music. :D

Well, Disco Volante is their most experimental effort and it's very hard to get into IMO. So I think you should check out the self-titled first. :tup

Dark, Quirky with a sense of melody actually almost describes stuff like The Dresden Dolls and Kiss Kiss pretty well.

First post here, been lurking a lot, but I just wanted to say.... DSO is incredibly awesome. I loves them.  :heart

Also, for dark, quirky music, does Primus fit the bill?

Superior
Great amazing Prog band that went unoticed and unfortunately, as I think, caused them to dispand.

The Flower Kings
They have some dark, melodic moments in their music, though they do tend to experiment, but I do love their soft, melodic parts.

Deadlock
Female fronted Death Metal -core (I despise that term), Honestly thats how this should be, all chick vocals with Growls, nice and smooth.

I don't know what you mean by quirky, but hope its enough melody to make up for that.
I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

These were the exact same bands I came in here to suggest.

Also :tup on the DSO. Love the band.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I'm seeing a lot of quirky (dark) music at the Lowlands festival this august:

Diablo Swing Orchestra
Minus The Bear
Jaga Jazzist
Massive Attack (!!)
Jonsi (Sigur Ros)
LCD Soundsystem
And So I Watch You From Afar (Awesome high-energy post-rock)
Serj Tankian + Metropole Orchestra

and Queens of the Stone Age, Air and Groove Armada (doesn't quite fit that bill).

I was hoping for PT this year (last year we got Opeth), but there's a lot to make up for it!

Ok so I've listened to some of the recommendations and intend to keep on listening to more! Here's an update:

Diablo Swing Orchestra - already knew them a bit, but given them some more listens and it's great stuff, particularly Singalong Songs...

Stolen Babies - checked out their only full-length album which is up on Spotify, and it's really good! The first couple of tracks were a little weak so I was a bit unsure at first, but after that the quirkiness and melody really comes through and it's a very solid album.

Mr Bungle - Had a listen through their self-titled album, and while it was quite good, it didn't really grab me. Definitely quirky, but I think just a little too bizarre for me. Whereas I love FNM because it has the quirkiness but also has more sense of melody and songwriting.

Cardiacs - Have had a listen through their 'Sampler' compilation, and there's some top-notch stuff on it, and some slightly odd stuff as well. Also had a listen to the first couple of tracks of Sing to God which were outright bizarre, but I'll give the album a proper listen at some point.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

I saw a copy of Geodaddy in the store the other day but I was already short on money. :sadpanda: I really need to get it next time though!

And ariich, for Bungle: you might want to check out California instead since it have a more stable and "mainstream" sound!

Please check out Mr. Bungle's album California, which is BY FAR their best effort imo. Dark, quirky, weird, poppy, all with amazing vocals and instrumentation!

Here is my fav song by them. ENJOY!

Not sure if it would exactly fit your request, but take after listening to the A7X song you mentioned, it reminds me of The Venetia Fair.  It might be a little more screaming than you're used to, but I don't like screaming usually, and I love TVF.  Listen to "The Ringleader" first, and then look up any of their other songs.  They only have one album out.
