Modern, heavy metal bands with clean vocals?
« on: July 18, 2010, 06:03:09 PM »
I'm trying to discover more new metal, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding bands as heavy as I want without scream/growl/etc vocals. I can tolerate a very small amount here and there, but I'm looking for predominantly clean vocals. Prog or not, makes no difference. Heavy, up tempo, high energy music with singing are the only requirements. My playlists for working out are too short as it is right now, and I'm getting tired of listening to the same things each week.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Nevermore fits the description of what you're looking for to a tee. Death/Thrash metal musicianship, but with clean vocals. One of my favorite bands. Definitely check them out if you haven't already.

An example song in case you've never heard them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PttwIiMPnc

THISTHISTHIS

Nevermore are fucking fantastic. I highly recommend checking out their album This Godless Endeavor, however you can't quite go wrong with any of their albums.

The Obsidian Conspiracy (song) from the new album (of the same title) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFU4ulcO6tM

Also there is an entire genre for what you are looking for. It's called power metal :p
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I'd kind of suggest Into Eternity, but they have a decent amount of screaming. However aside from a lack of basic song writing skills they are quite good. And currently possess pretty much the greatest modern metal singer.

Texas Hippie Coalition, Thought Chamber, Fireland, The Sword, Machine Head, Municipal Waste (although the lyrics are sung so fast I consider them "harsh"), and Nevermore (as mentioned).

Alter Bridge's Blackbird is good. Not exactly metal, but definitely a little bit more than Hard Rock.

Blind Guardian. Not exactly modern, but they're releasing a new album this year that's going to crush balls around the world.

Fifth'd

Get Snowfall On Judgement Day, The first Redemption album I bought. I didn't expect it to be as heavy as it is, it's good metal with nice Keyboards and riffs. One of my favorite metal albums.

I might've misread the OP/thread title, but aren't we looking for modern bands? Does that mean still active, or bands that are new???

I think he means more modern sounding metal.  I don't think bands like Maiden and Priest are what he's asking for.

Seconding my own rec may be a bastard move, but I've yet to see a band mentioned in this thread that is better than them, so I don't care :P The riffs are loud, full of balls, and they will rip you apart. Mike Scalzi is one of the best singers ever, and they don't take themselves so seriously either.

I'm a huge TLWSF fanboy, but let me post some links to some of their best shit.

Brave Connor Mac: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HowfL7v8exs

Dearg Doom (Horslips Cover, but I prefer this over the original. Plus this song's lyrics are just classic): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n3oZyxjDoo

Street Jammer (Manilla Road Cover, but I prefer this version still): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJi13sg8Lmk

Tiger! Tiger!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv6bw10es2c&feature=related

Sea Wolf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgPNU8uH4pA&feature=related

Ape Uprising (Slough Feg aren't an "epic" kind of band normally but this is one of the few shots they do make at doing an epic song. A 10 minute piece with seven minutes of jamming and it is epic!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwPfBm84fMU

Enjoy!
