@Orbert: are you big on Brubeck? I have Time Out, but have no idea what albums to look out for next.
Having said that, almost every record store I've ever seen only has his best of and/or Time Out, so yeah.
Dave Brubeck is the man. All others are, by comparison, women.
Time Out was such a huge and unexpected hit that they followed it up with
Time Further Out, which has the "Unsquare Dance". There's also
Time Changes,
Time in Outer Space, and of course
Time In. Brubeck is such a kidder.
So those are the "Time" albums. (Don't be confused by the early album
Brubeck Time. It's great, but predated the "Time" albums, and the name is just a coincidence.) I'm guessing that if you like
Time Out, you'll probably like all of those. But Brubeck wasn't just about wacky time signatures; he does plenty of straight jazz as well.
Live in 1956-57 is all standards.
At Carnegie Hall is a mixture of jazz standards and Brubeck time craziness, and is highly recommended.
There's also a series of
Jazz Impressions of <Japan, New York, Eurasia, etc.> albums. Those are interesting, and generally very good.
Forget not the solo Brubeck stuff. One man, one piano.
Just You, Just Me,
One Alone, and
Indian Summer are all perfect for chilling out.
