Typically, people who voice that opinion of DT either haven't actually heard more than a few seconds of DT, if any at all, and are just parroting what they've heard other people say. With most of these people, you could play them Disappear or Hollow Years, and they'd still claim that it was a musical wank shred fest.

Edit: There's this hipster type guy who hangs out with one of my friends sometimes. He made those kinds of claims about DT. I put on To Live Forever one time without telling him who it was. He loved it. As soon as he found out it was DT, he immediately started finding fault with it.

I strongly agree with #1, 2 and 9, the first two ones being what most of the people I know answer when I ask them that question and #9 being what most Death or Black Metal fans I know answer.

About the Dream Theater stuff, I guess the only songs he has heard from them is "This Dying Soul" and "Constant Motion" and thought all DT songs must have sounded like that I also can't say that's true, most DT fans I know aren't that way.

I personally think that post should have been named "This list looks promising and funny, but since I'm a hipster, I'm gonna twist it in order that it becomes a list of what bands I despise"

Normally I answer

I listen to a lot of different stuff

and then I usually can't be bothered elaborating, just as they can't be bothered listening to a long list of genres   But I can often find a band I have in common with most people.

In regards to others, I don't really judge a persons taste when talking to them. Some people just aren't that into music. So the convo will move on to a new topic

Criticisms of DT have become really cliche lately, but that's partly because fans were so zealous about promoting them to begin with.
