but it takes talent to write music as catchy as they do and they're amazing why can't you see it and if you say pop music is crap you're a total prog elitist wtf man

This was where I got you like Miley and Bieber, because this was your post after I posted the picture of the two.

I don't have much of an opinion of Justin Timberlake as a musician, but he's hillarious as an actor. Quite good, not amazing, but pretty good actor in my opinion. And nice body.

It was a joke based on the "controversial opinions" thread, where someone said pop stars are talented because they can write catchy music and I was called a prog elitist because I said 95% of modern pop is crap. :P

It has actually been scientifically proven that most of Michael Jackson's songs from Thriller onward are awesome.

How is writing your own music a marker of good pop? If a song is good, it's good, and if it's bad, it's bad, not only regardless of whether the person singing it wrote it themselves, but regardless of who wrote it at all.

True, but there's a pretty damn strong correlation between artists who write their own music and music that's worth listening to. There's obviously exceptions to this, Elton John being one, Kesha obviously not on the same tier. Of course, pop artists writing their own music doesn't necessarily translate to anything special. I don't see, for example, how Lady Gaga is ANY different from the rest of those faceless pops act out now (other than her putting on a face).

I'm confused on the Elton John remark.  He wrote the songs and Bernie wrote the lyrics.

To clarify, I didn't meant that Elton John was just a face, as many current popstars are, I just meant that the notion of pop music and pop stars as more than one person and an entire package rather than just limited to a single name wasn't necessary a bad one.

I don't get why anyone would think Kesha is good pop, she's scraping the bottom of the barrel of shit. She's easily the best example of horrible music today.

I haven't said I like Bieber or Cyrus, quite the opposite. :P Maybe they can sing, but well... Timberlake defines the worst possible side of pop performed by, erm, men - the "wow look I'm so hot" guy with a voice sounding like he's about to fall apart, Pink sounds extremely annoying.

And well, I definitely don't like Britney Spears, and her early songs are equally terrible, but some of her later work is a different thing and two or three tiers above 90% of that list... The only one I can agree without any doubt whatsoever that it's good pop is Michael Jackson.
Justin Timberlake's vocal style often directly reminds me of Michael Jackson's, but ok.

I don't get Michael Jackson. There's just some instances where, no matter how hard I try or should, I can't remove the art from my feelings about the artist.

Off the Wall is good, but I personally find it harder to get into than the albums that followed it (except for 'Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough', which is awesome).

I've always felt that with pop, the key to being good is to not take itself too seriously. It's like those candies that look like little bananas. Those things taste like shit, because it's candy masquerading as a banana, which is real food. Candy should embrace its candiness and be the best damn candy it can be, like a Warhead.

Justin Timberlake has to be the best male example of good pop.

Also good pop (IMHO): John Mayer and Jason Mraz.

I consider pop to be whatever plays on top-40 stations on the radio.  I've never heard a Michael Jackson song on a top-40 station.

No idea about any top whatever lists, but I've heard Michael Jackson many times in the radio, and not necessarily in the past year. (And I'm talking about a 100% mainstream radio)
