Buckethead doing Dream Theater?
« on: June 20, 2010, 08:48:13 AM »
Does this live recording remind anybody of a Dream Theater track?

A little but it's a common rhythm and chord structure.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

That song sounds very familiar. It might be on one of his newer albums. Maybe Pepper's Ghost.

I don't know what it reminds you of exactly (maybe Overture 1928 or The Count of Tuscany), but I know it sounds really cool. Buckethead is an incredible guitarist, but I never listened to any of his studio albums - there's just too many.

That's the problem I have with him. He releases at least 2 albums a year.

Also, Soothsayer is probably one of my favorite songs ever.

Then why not ask one of the Buckethead enthusiasts on DTF what albums are worth checking out?  ;)

Seriously, if you even just have respect for the guy, I say go check out Albino Slug, Population Override, Colma, Monsters and Robots, Inbred Mountain or Bucketheadland 2 (if you want a dose of the more obscure side of Buckethead that is). All of these albums are fantastic. Try at least ONE of these albums.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

It depends on what you want. My FAVORITE album of ALL-TIME is Buckethead's Electric Tears. It's all soft electric guitar pieces done in minor. Colma is my 3rd favorite album ever, and it's almost all acoustic guitar, but with percussion and they're in major. Chicken Noodles (an album he did with Travis Dickerson) is in similar vein to these two albums, using only a Telecaster and a Fender Rhodes. Very gorgeous.

My first Buckethead album was Population Override, which sold me.

If you want crazy shredding compositions, get Crime Slunk Scene first. Then, get Pepper's Ghost (This one is more consistent than Crime, but Crime contains some of his best and most essential).

Good luck.

Decoding the Tomb of Bansheebot is my personal favourite, it has a bit of everything, and is still accessible, I think it makes a good introduction to Buckethead.

On topic, yep it's similar, but it's most likely a coincidence, if it is an intentional nod, it's cool to know that he digs DT.
The band describing John Myung:
JLB: "He's deep. He's deep in thought"
JP: "We have a deep understanding musically"
JR: "John Myung is a very deep kind of person"
MP: "John Myung is an enigma... N he's deep as fuck yo'"

Thanks a lot for the recommendations, guys. I'll have this thread in mind when the time for checking out some more Buckethead comes.  :tup
