Yesterday I started a Deep Purple kick with Shades of Deep Purple.

Mediocre debut. Nothing compared to what they would become.

Show some love.

One of the foundational bands of heavy metal, along with Zeppelin and Sabbath.  "Machine Head" is one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

In Rock - one of the first albums i ever recall listening too. My father is a big DP fan, and he used to sing the "aaaaaaaaaaah" in Child in time along with the LP when i was a kid.
Ten years later they became one of my favorite bands.

I saw lucky to seee reunion tour in 85(?)  I was in the 3rd row and it was the loudest show I have ever went to.  I didn't have earplugs and my ears rang of 2 days.  Great show though!

Don't DP actually have the record for "loudest band" in the Guinness Book?

One of my five favorite bands. All lineups. I love how I will never ever be able to collect everyone of their releases. They seem to be up there with Zappa as far as quantity goes.

I'm just a fan of Gillan and the first line up eras. They made the most relevant music until they made too much and after a while a lot of line ups came and went, so the band name got old.

Made In Japan/Live In Japan are fucking awesome live albums. Probably the best non-film live performances ever.
Machine Head is my favourite Gillan album, though Who Do We Think We Are is underrated for sure. It took some time for it to grow on me.
The Book Of Taliesyn is my favourite Evans/Simper album.

I get back into them every now and then, but recently I don't have the urge to listen to them. I've listened enough I believe. :lol

Don't have much Deep Purple, just Machine Head, In Rock, and Made in Japan, but its all great stuff.  I might invest in a Coverdale album next time I go out.

Holy crap I love Deep Purple.  Top 3 band for me that probably just beats out Dream Theater.

Ian Paice, Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore make my all-time top 1 or 2 respective drummers, keyboardists and guitarists.  I really believe that Dream Theater modelled their configuration after the Mark II lineup.  Aside from being a 5-piece with keyboards and superb musicianship, both bands manage to instill a lot of nuance and finesse in their brand of hard rock/heavy metal.  And that core of Paice/Lord/Blackmore which lasted through Marks I-III is reminiscent to me of DT's Petrucci/Myung/Portnoy.

Funny thing too is that both DP and DT are accused of wankery, although of different sorts.  Purple are steeped in 70's hippie-bluesy jam improvisation, a style which completely satisfies my love of both hard rock and jam-rock.  If you listen closely to those short-ish songs on In Rock and Machine Head, they're practically lightly-pencilled sketches that provide a vehicle for the band to fill in the blanks by flexing their muscles and showing off their instrumental chops.    Songs like "Lazy", "The Mule" and "Space Truckin" are obviously designed with extended jams in mind.  Those sketches become full-fledged paintings on Made In Japan, the best live album ever imo.  It's no wonder that DT did a Ytsejam cover of that album.

Deep purple is a band I'm starting to get into.  Burn so far is my favorite song by them, hands down.  That may change.  The circle of fifths in that song is awesome.

My favorite Mk. II record is In Rock of course. It seems to be over-shadowed by Machine Head way to much (as great of a record as it is).

If you are going to pick up a Coverdale/Hughes era record, the obvious choice is Burn. It is funk-tastic. One of my favorite records for naughtiness ;D

Keep in mind the soul/R&B/funk/blues element is on high with those releases so expect a different beast altogether from the Gillan era stuff (although Gillan is God - just making that clear :P).

Agree this.

Another underappreciated album is the second of the MII lineup, Fireball.    It's a bit proggy and less accessible/catchy than In Rock or Machine Head.

They're solid, though i don't care much for the overplayed hits. (i don't like Smoke on the Water)
Seen them live twice, they didn't really rotate a lot in the set (but hey, what can you expect from a band that's almost 40 years into their career).

Favorite songs would be: Anya & Sometimes i Feel Like Screaming (none of them seems to get too much attention from fans)

Yeah, they were awarded that honor way back in the 70's.  I have no idea whether or not it's still true, or if they even have that category anymore, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Loudness trivia time:  It was The Who in 78 that were generally considered the loudest.  That's long since past.  Manowar set a record at one point.  Motley Crue claimed to break the record each night for one tour (I think ToP).  I was at one of the shows and it sounded like shit.  The Guinness folks stopped keeping track of it as a record so as not to encourage that sort of thing.  KISS was cited at 136db by LEA last year, and that might actually qualify.

I've been a DP fan for a while now.  Always go to see them whenever they play.  Never got to see the Blackmore lineup, though.  Also pretty cool with the MKIII lineup as well.  Still love watching the Cal-Jam show.

Currently on the fifth album of my Deep Purple kick (Fireball).

I can't decide what is better: This, or In Rock?

Fireball is an underrated gem, but I still prefer In Rock. But those two and Machine Head are pretty much responsible for most of the trademarks of metal music.

I only have Machine Head, but damn is it great! For about a year, I considered it one of the best five albums ever, and rightfully so! There is not one weak track on it, and I used to listen to it everyday. I should get more of their stuff.

I don't hold Perfect Strangers in quite the light some fans tend to, but it is certainly enjoyable. Its been so long since I've had a DP kick. I think that needs changing...

I like Perfect Strangers, and it was very exciting when that album came out, because it was the amazing return of classic Deep Purple, but I still find myself spinning Miachine Head and Made in Japan more often.

I've actually been listening to some DP lately, as I've gotten into Blackmore's Night (completely opposite bands, but I wanted to hear some real Blackmore :lol ).

The only full albums I have are Fireball and Machine Head (which are both great), and then I have a best of "Deepest Purple". I want to hear more of the Coverdale era stuff though, as I'm a big Coverdale fan. Stormbringer and Burn are awesome songs.

Dude, you've got to get Burn the album right now!

Very funky, and I've hear the Stormbringer album is quite swell, as well.

Shame on you for not having In Rock; it's the best MKII album, and has Child in Time, which is fucking godly!

I have Child In Time on a best of. I've never found the song that interesting. I prefer Deep Purple when they're just straight up rockin'.
