Excellent show.  Havok was really good.  The lead guitarist's amp didn't work for the entire first song.  He and a slew of roadies were trying to figure out the problem.  He didn't play a note the first song.  When the song was over, the drummer did an impromptu solo while a road case was brought out with a new amp, and they got it hooked up quick.  That second amp should've already been on stage and turned on, ready to go in the case of something like this happening.  Not cool.  Otherwise, they were good.

COB, instrumentally was excellent.  As noted above, the vocals I could've done without.  ST was very good, they were all running around stage the entire set, like they were all 20 years old.  Megadeth did not disappoint one bit.  Sure, they've downtuned some of the classics, and Dave can't sing them all the way he used to, but you go in expecting that.  They were still awesome, nonetheless.

Good to see that they are playing more of the new album.  I know it has been discussed to death in many threads for many bands, but I hate to see a band touring on a new album and hardly playing any of it (or not playing it at all).

I think the new album might be the best thing they've released in a decade.  I didn't think Mustaine had another album like this in him.  I know it gets said all the time when the topic of this band comes up but I really DO think this album is the closest in style and sound to Rust In Peace that they've ever done.

It almost sounds like a tribute to Rust In Peace - at least musically.  Lyrically, not so much.  Dave seems to have a problem with the government  :rollin

If you haven't picked up the album yet I recommend the Best Buy version with 2 bonus studio tracks.  It makes the record seem more complete.

Killer album...I am still driving around with it blaring in my car and I got it on release day

I'm still loving Dystopia. Love the fact that Megadeth are still releasing relevant albums this far into their career. They are probably one of the only old school thrash bands that are, other than perhaps Testament, in my opinion.

Dystopia is great but Megadeth just had a run of a couple mediocre albums.
Try the new Flitsam & Jetsam. A return to the classic style.

I think what Megadeth have put out since 2002 trumps anything else that the rest of The Big Four have put out since then, by a long way!! If we made it The Big Five and included Testament then they would have a run for their money. I don't rate anything Slayer have done since God Hates Us All (which I love), never truly rated Anthrax at all and, well, Metallica  :|

I think The System has Failed, United Abominations and Endgame are all great.

I enjoy the fact that Megadeth has been constantly industrious over the last 10 years and kept releasing new material, unlike some other big bands of their genre. However, the streak of the last five albums doesn't do a whole lot for me. Thirteen and United abominations are two of my lesser favorite Megadeth albums overall, and Dystopia sounded like same old to me and it's unnecessarily heavy. I actually enjoyed Super collider the most, it was a bit different and the guys were obviously not ashamed that they're not as loud and menacing as in their younger days.

As do I, especially Endgame. Megadeth had "quietly" put together a deep and rich discography that any of the 80's metal/thrash bands would be envious to have.

The last two Anthrax albums have been excellent, and frankly the last two Testament albums so out rule anything they've ever done.

Wasn't aware this existed, but it is short song-by-song explanations by Marty Friedman on the songs from RIP through Risk:  https://www.davemustainerig.com/megadeth-songs.php#Rust in Peace

Pretty cool read, although I would have liked more detail in spots.

Wait, so...you're saying St. Anger is...bad?

:)

No, I'm not going to defend that one.  But in the case of Risk, they went outside their comfort zone, and even though it is really different for Megadeth, I feel like a lot of it worked.  Not in all cases, but mostly.  Brief track-by-track:
-Insomnia:  Not really that far off the beaten path for Megadeth, IMO, although the addition of middle eastern strings and somewhat industrial sounding riffs and loops was new.  It is an odd combination that works and makes for a cool vibe.
-Prince of Darkness:  Other than being so polished and streamlined, which sounds very much in line with what they had done on the previous two albums, this is pretty standard Megadeth.  No complains here.
-Enter the Arena/Crush 'Em:  Yeah, I won't even defend this.
-Breadline:  Not TOO much of a deviation for Megadeth.  I mean, it doesn't sound too far removed from something that could have been on Youthanasia or Cryptic, if not maybe a bit more mainstream.  Not one of my favorites from the album, but it does have a nice groove to it.
-The Doctor is Calling:  One of my top 3 from the album.  Love this song.  Heavy and creepy.
-I'll Be There:  This is also one that probably throws most for a loop.  This isn't really what we signed up for when we bought an album that said "Megadeth" on the cover, right?  I like the riff underneath the chorus, but as a whole, this song doesn't really do it for me.
-Wanderlust:  Also in my top 3.  Jimmy's very cold drum sound fits well with this song.
-Ecstacy:  I feel like I shouldn't like this song as much as I do.  When I think of Dave's vamping underneath the last parts of the solo before the final chorus, I kinda cringe.  The verses...sometimes I dig what is going on; sometimes I don't.  But the chorus really makes the song.  Not typical Megadeth at all, and if people want to put this in the "doesn't work for me" category, I'm fine with that.  But this song definitely has its moments.
-Seven:  Hated it at first, but grew to love it.  Also out of the box, but really, really fun and has an amazing groove.
-Time (both of them):  I'm not sure why Dave has been so adamant that these are completely different, unrelated songs that are linked only by a very generally broad theme.  The second seems to lyrically flow right from the first to me.  :dunno:  But anyway, this pair is really incredible.  These show off what I like so much about Megadeth in every way.  These songs, taken together, round out my top 3 (or top 4, if that better suits you).

It is a great album. Other than Endgame, this is the best in TWO decades!

I think this is better than Endgame too!

I agree. Dystopia and Endgame (minus the really bad ballad) are top notch.
Yeah, I agree.  Outside the classic era (which I consider to be Rust through Youthanasia), I would put those two albums up there as their best, with the possible exception of my strange affinity for Risk.

I find it funny that whilst Mustaine has fired umpteen people from Megadeth over the years - he himself is the sole member of Metallica to ever get fired.

Since Kill Em All was released - Metallica has been the same 3 guys for 36 years. One member died, One member quit.

I guess Lars isn't all that hard to get along with. . . At least compared to Dave.

It works for them. Metallica thrives on being a band, Megadeth works as a Mustaine solo project. The big upside is that he can reinvent the band every few years. I thought Megadeth was starting to get pretty stale (Super Collider was one of the worst albums they ever made) but Dystopia was a real return to form. A big part of that was the new lineup IMO.

I agree. I think the revolving lineup works to keep things fresh for the band and allows Megadeth to put out albums at a much more steady clip than Metallica ever has.

It's also a little ironic that Mustaine was booted from Metallica for being undisciplined in terms of the drugs and alcohol and yet Mustaine has been much more disciplined about producing new music at a consistent pace, despite all of his personal vices.

Absolutely. Of course, any band with that kind of longevity will have its ups and downs in their discog, but Megadeth's stacks up well against any other metal band out there.

Happy Birthday Gar Samuelson. Would've been 59 today.

I saw Megadeth open for Alice Cooper in early '87 on the Peace Sells tour. I was standing on the side of the stage on Gar's right, looking directly over his floor toms right at him for the entire show. I was mesmerized by his drumming. There was just something really cool about it. I remember that was my thought.

CD

Details

SHIPPING NOTICE: This is a presale item set to ship around 06/06/2018

Century Media & Legacy Recordings are proud to announce the 2018 deluxe re-issue of Megadeth’s classic debut album, Killing Is My Business...and Business Is Good!

Killing Is My Business...and Business Is Good - The Final Kill has been completely restored to Dave Mustaine’s intended vision. Remixed by veteran metal mixer, Mark Lewis (Whitechapel) and remastered by Ted Jensen for an optimal listening experience, the 2018 version reveals unheard parts and performances throughout the record. This rare gem includes the full album, along with 7 live audio tracks from VHS tapes found in Dave Mustaine’s own attic! In addition to the bonus live tracks, the 2018 re-issue also features Megadeth’s 1984 3-track demo and the once removed cover of Lee Hazelwood’s, “The Boots” that has been added back to the record with recut vocals intended to maintain the integrity of both the original song and Megadeth’s own snarling rendition.

The package is further enhanced by a new album cover featuring a fully executed sculpture of the iconic skull that has been lost over the many years since the album’s initial release. The packaging also includes classic flyers and band photos pulled from their archive of timeless metal moments from Megadeth’s storied 35 year history. The Final Kill is the complete vision of main man, Dave Mustaine, who has contributed liner notes delving into the struggles during that time period as well as some of the surprising moments during the remixing sessions.

“I am just as much amazed at the music we made as I am at the pure fact that we survived it all!” - Dave Mustaine

I'm not a fan of early Megadeth.  RiP, Countdown, Youthanasia, Hidden Treasures, Risk, and TWNAH are the "sweet spot" for me.  But this looks like a pretty cool package.
