80s songs/bands that sound like Mr. Mister
« on: May 06, 2010, 09:36:40 PM »
I love Mr. Mister, as some of you may know.  It was a band I totally grew up with in the 80s, and is some of the earliest music I remember my dad playing on his turntable.

I was watching the Breakfast Club tonight, and noticed a song that sounded exactly like Mr. Mister.  Compare.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcSGtXk6VSU - Into My Own Hands (Mr. Mister)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pilUtb5-pT4 - Heart Too Hot To Hold (Breakfast Club)

Any other songs with this mid-80s synth and drum machine laden sound popular in 80s pop-rock?  I love it!

I love Into My Own Hands.  the solo is killer Splent.  I'd day Mid 80's Toto is very similar.

Anything from Toto--Isolation,  The Seventh One, or Isolation

Have you heard anything from the unreleased Mr. Mister album "Pull"?  There's a song called "Let The River" that is phenomenal.  Much more "mature".  Kind of almost would've fit on their last album.
I always liked that band.

I have the whole album.  That album is awesome and it really sucks that it was never officially released.

My favorite song is Kyrie, but I love everything by Mr. Mister, including from their first album.  And I agree totally on mid-80s Toto... that and Mike and the Mechanics.  That more mature 80s synth pop rock is just so awesome.  I wish that stuff would come back.

I'm not really good with that side of the 80's, but have you tried putting together a Mr. Mister station in Pandora to see what it comes up with?

Splent check out Frozen Ghost - Frozen Ghost
Quite possibly some of the best production on a cd EVER.

My wife saw Mr.Mister and has a concert shirt..it's an adult xl. It doesn't fit my 7 year old LOL...I dunno if they just sold really small shirts back then or what.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

It's been almost 25 years since I've heard the name Frozen Ghost. Yikes.

I'm just happy that Pat Mastelotto joined King Crimson and the Stickmen (which is really all I have to add about Mr. Mister).

Just remembered this thread, resurrecting it...

And yeah, I dig Frozen Ghost.  I should ask my dad about them.

Also listen to my dad's band from the 80s:  Worlds

I am a big fan of Cutting Crew's debut record, Broadcast.  Most just know the big hit from it, "(I Just) Died in Your Arms," but the whole CD is damn good.  Plenty of catchy melodies, some surprisingly tasty guitar licks, and a very cool atmosphere and vibe.  I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of 80s music.

Spandau Ballet anyone? Not sure if it fits the description...

I love the song True. Damn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e4WLdLNajs

Love this kind of music, too.

Commodores Nightshift is pretty sweet, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrkEDe6Ljqs

That's a great record.  I bought it for my girlfriend as she's a fan, but kept it for myself for a while  :lol

Oh, and Mr Mister are amazing.

I too love this album.  From Sahara to One for the Mockingbird.

"One for the Mockingbird" was my favorite of the three singles/videos from that record.  And I think most probably forget that "I've Been in Love Before" was a pretty big hit, too (along with "(I Just) Died..."); MTV played the crap out of the video, and I think it hit the top 10 singles chart, IIRC.

That's a great record.  I bought it for my girlfriend as she's a fan, but kept it for myself for a while  :lol

Hehe, nice. :lol

Whenever I hear "Sowing the Seeds of Love," I can still sing along almost word for word.  That was easily my favorite song of 1989, at the time.  :coolio

I love TFF too.  They are so full of angst.  Perfect to listen to when you are pissed off.

Going back to Mr. Mister, any of you guys have Pull (the 4th unreleased album)?  Man that was a great record and it is absolutely too bad that it was never released.  These guys need to get back together.

Favorite songs from each album:
I Wear the Face:  Hunters of the Night - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmwWiFCB7L8
Welcome to the Real World: Kyrie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNKbHJ3PTu4
Go On... : Bare My Soul - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcfXyNZf0w4
Pull : Belong to No One - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f31ROcUm9sM

By the Way, interesting fact: Steve Farris worked with Tori Amos on her first album Y Kant Tori Read... you can totally tell the sound was that similar synth pop sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzTNhdO0elM

I love Steve Farris's playing.  Do you know he did an uncredited solo for the Kiss song Creatures of the Night?  They asked him to join and die his hair black but he stuck with Mr. Mister.

Also, Cutting Crew used producer Terry Brown of Rush fame.  Broadcast is a great record!

Anybody remember a pop group called Johnny Hates Jazz?

"Shattered Dreams" is all I knew and know by them.  Pretty good song.  It's on my big 80s playlist, but it is not one I go for that often.

"Elemental" was a great record, too, by Tears for Fears.  Very mature sound, though it wasn't the "whole" band.  Just Roland.  But a great record!
